Thinking of the two bike Thule Elite Van XT (in black). It can comfortably carry our racers or the VTTs within the theoretical max weight limit of 35kg I've looked into other non-door mounted options but they all seem to cost an arm and a leg. And even the Thule isn't cheap. Anyone got any alternative suggestions? Or comments on the Thule?

Thule fitted to our van, really solid piece of kit - easy to load up - we use it to carry two road bikes weighing a total of 18.5kg and at other times two mountain bikes weighing a total of 27kg. Had a Fiamma on our previous VW, the Thule feels so much more secure.

I fitted the Thule to my pvc a few weeks ago. Easy to fit, seems very sturdy and comes with lockable arms to secure the bikes. No drilling required. I thought about fitting it without using adhesive, but the thought of my bikes bouncing down the road got the better of me and I used Simson ISR70-03 as adhesive. I'm a tall bloke but couldn't reach to fit a bag over my bikes with the rack at the middle height so I bought a folding step. The step folds flat and takes up very little space in the van.
I worry about the door hinges with the extra weight of the bikes and rack and will keep an eye on this.
The step below is what I got. It was £ 12.99 when I got it a few weeks ago.

I have an Altera Strada 3 fitted to my towbar. Tilts far enough to open the rear doors with bikes on.

Hmm,. I have a towbar rack already for the car but not sure about the tilt. TBH I had discounted the towbar racks as I don't think I want a towhitch on the van. It's quite a pricey option! Maybe I'll change my mind when I find I want to take a load of extra stuff on holibobs with me....

I looked at all the options before settling on a door mounted rack. As you say, the other options are significantly more expensive. I'm happy with the Thule. The only noticeable downside is my reversing camera is on the high level brake light so the view is limited with bikes on, still helpful though. With a bike bag fitted there is no view at all.

Is it possible to change the height of the bikes (move the rails in which the wheels sit vertically)? Does that help at all?

Thule say "Supporting frame is height adjustable" -not quite sure what that means ...

There are three height adjustments for the wheel rails, which you select when building the rack. On the bottom setting, the easiest for loading the bikes on, the bike wheels cover the light cluster so a separate light bar would be needed ( you could take your chances with the police). On the middle one, that I use, the wheels just clear the light cluster and the locking bike frame holders are reachable, just. The high setting would make it really difficult to fit the bikes on and nigh on impossible to lock them on unless you had a step ladder.
