Hoping Robert Clark chimes in as i hear he’s the man on this topic but all experiences ar welcome 🙏

Thinking about upgrading Mrs Ridgeways ebike for a few reasons: 1: the resale price for 2nd hand is currently really good, 2: there’s a great subsidy from our commune and 3: i know we’ll need a new battery soon for the CUBE…..

So started to think about belt drive and whilst my original idea was a full Pedelec at 45kmh it seems Mrs R. thinks the dogs would need goggles at those speeds. In reality what we need is just a decent amount of torque for the 55kgs of trailer and dogs she tows every day. Had a look around at a few places this week and starting to like the look of the Reise and Muller options with belt drive based on a standard 25km/h Bosch CX Performance line, probably with the 625w battery.

So far i only see the advantages of belt drive for this application (the negatives seem mainly around harder servicing and higher initial costs). The bike is used in all weather, 5 days a week for 52wks a year and tends to get a bit neglected ie when something falls off then Mrs R. May think about mentioning to me.

Anyone with any experiences of belt drive ebikes ? any comments.

Thanks

If it is used in all weathers I can highly recommend to buy a Gazelle with belt drive and closed stepless gear hub, quality of these Dutch bikes is incredible, Gazelle are build in the Netherlands and they do so for more then a hundred years, my Gazelle lives outside all year around, as do lots of bikes owned by the Dutch people and there is no rust, they simply use no materials which rust, it’s all aluminium and stainless, detailed perfection.
There are various bike shops in the Uk selling Gazelle bikes, give it a Google, they have a whole range of bikes for all purposes .

We’ve got a couple of R&M belt drive bikes with Rolhoff hub gears. We chose the twin battery model as this offers greater range, however the added weight makes lifting the bikes an issue for Mrs C. However you can remove one battery and fit a cover in its place.

We chose the belt drive as it would be a lot cleaner than a chain for loading into the garage.

Mrs C had a problem with the electrics on her bike winch took our dealer and the manufacturer an age to sort out. In the end we insisted on a replacement bike.

Overall we love the bikes and would recommend the belt drive and Rolhoff gears.

No idea about e-bikes but I've ridden Harleys through France and Spain they have belt drive. No problems when touring but I did have a belt go once near home, it was old and I should have replaced it sooner.
