I’ve just bought two leisure batteries but they won’t be fitted until the end of March , I’m going to be away and was going to pick them up when I got back, but chatting with the lad at go-outdoors he said ok to take them now as they would only sit there anyway, I asked if they needed to be charged and he said no. Now I’m sat home thinking that you should never let your batteries go flat, I didn’t ask if they were fully charged, any advice will be appreciated.

Mickey.

they will be fine as not connected to anything.

They will be fine, provided they have a decent state of charge to begin with. I know the Go Outdoors guy said they were ok, but it's worth sticking a meter on them to check the voltage and make sure. It always worries me at such places, how long they have been sat on the shelf.

If you have a battery charger why not give them both a charge. It won't hurt them and then when you come to fit them you know they are charged and ready to go. (y)

Lead acid batteries can self discharge at a rate of about 5% per month, even when completely disconnected. Best to make sure they are properly charged before leaving them for a few months.

And keep em off any cold concrete floors

as above, quick way to kill a good battery left on a cold garage floor,. Give them a good charge before storing them in a place well above freezing

I've never liked the idea of storing a battery which isn't fully charged & as TheBig1 say's, see if you can find somewhere which will not go below freezing.

Thanks for all replies, every bit of advice has been a great help.

Just looked at the battery and there’s a chart saying green is good, so hopefully will be ok.
