Have you tried britstops or s4s ?

Earlier this year we overnighted at the aire you mentioned in Fairbourne just over the estuary from Barmouth.

From memory it was £5 for the night. Fairly basic but the sort of facility that we need more of in the UK so should be supported. Walked over the railway bridge into Barmouth for some food and a drink and caught the train back over the bridge to Fairbourne. Again from memory the train was £3 or £4 for the journey back.

did you pay on arrival or via app.

Paid using an app from memory. Camera-controlled ANPR system to prevent non-payers if I recall correctly. Basic aire but newly installed good black waste disposal facilities.

Served it's purpose for an overnight stop.

Shell island
If not a school or bank hol

10 miles out of Barmouth though.
The Aire is the other side of Afon Mawdach / river will be less travelling time from Shell Island, instead of via paempool, from the Glan Y Mor Ayre

That, of course if the OP needs to go into Barmouth

Walk (60 minutes), cycle (15 minutes) or take train (5 minutes , 2 stops) across the estuary over the bridge from Fairbourne.

There is a Car Park right in the The centre of Barmouth just before the Fish and chip shop you can stay there £10 . We have stayed a few times without any problems. There is a sign saying Overnight Parking.

No there is Definitely Parking there it has water and a bin but no elsan, you can cut through their private ally and come out opposite Ebineezeers Hippie Chapel, when you go the car park you turn into the left side of the car park if the man is not there you pay him when he comes.

Barmouth estuary bridge is closed while the centre rotating section is replaced .
We stay at Benar beach farm field £12 pn fantastic beach.
Ah well that definitely rules out Fairbourne for the time being. When we walked over the bridge in April maintenance work was being carried out then. Worryingly rusty in parts. Was open to trains and pedestrians then though.

On Shell Island at the mo. End of season fireworks display which is normally amazing. £21 per night for 2 and the event marquee is absolutely huge. Live music Friday and Saturday night.

I've got his phone number I'll give him a ring out of curiosity.

Had a night at glan y mor, and a couple more in Barmouth. Tomorrow we're heading off towards Aberystwyth any more recommended sites. Hopefully if we have the rain will catch some waves too.

We've overnighted on the Esplanade in Aberystwyth. Right down the far end by the University halls of residence just before the funicular.. Usually one or two other vans discreetly parked up there. No restrictions overnight. Great atmosphere. Joggers, pram pushers, university students partying and BBQing on the beach, buskers and fire jugglers last time we were there earlier this year. Great sunsets too. 👍

Alternatively, Aberystwyth Rugby Club allow overnight parking for motorhomes in their carpark. Something like £10 or £15. Never stayed there myself, but regarded it as a Plan B if the Esplanade was full.

Aberystwyth is quite a decent town for a day or two. Decent pubs and places to eat and a laid back "alternative" atmosphere. I'd recommend Ultra Comida (Spanish Deli) for a nice picnic lunch.
