Not a lot of experience but last year I bought a 1994 Auto sleeper Amethyst automatic. This is the coachbuilt monocoque so will be heavier than your Duetto. Mine has the 2.5 diesel banana engine with a full 78 HP mated to the auto box so it is not the fastest thing on the road, however it cruises at 60 mph ok on the flat but dies a death on the hills. The auto box operates well and changes smoothly. When I bought the van I thought if I have any problems with the gearbox I will convert it to manual but now after a year of driving if it gives me problems I will get it reconditioned or get another auto box .

I am not sure about the earlier Ford automatics but I think they were not much different to an automatic gearbox fitted to cars. The newer ones were electrically controlled and did cause some problems.
We had an N Reg Duetto as our first van and found it to be typical van to drive and the clutch was a bit heavy. Our current motorhome is based on a 55 plate Mk6 Transit and it’s very different and more car like to drive.
As said maybe the Autosleeper forum would give you specific advice.
