The Rapido 8094df is a nice van. It has an L shaped rear lounge rather than a U shaped one, which may or may not bother you.We looked at one a few months ago and were tempted. The only thing that put us off was the transverse drop-down bed. We wanted a longitudinal one. It is available as an automatic.

The payload doesn’t look like being very much as unladen it’s 3170 add water and gas and you will struggle to stay under 3500kg

Whole range of makes now have autos. Fiat have changed to a torque converter auto recently and Ford also have a torque converter auto.

Funny you should say that , it was the model that sprung into my mind as I was reading this topic .

With a rear lounge layout. You are looking at making beds up nightly, OR a drop down, 99% of which will be Transverse. To stay under 3.5t LOADED you may struggle. IMV you are looking at a smaller M-H. "Used" Auto`s are not easy to come by, We where "on the lookout" for over a Year. And mine (Rapido 999M) ultimately, IS over 3.5t. I manage to keep passing the medical (so far), and am good until 2022.

There are NEW automatics coming out all the time Both Ford and Fiat (so likely the Puegeot`s too) have them as well as Mercedes base vans.

For anyone who wants to "research" `van Layouts This is a good link:- http://www.highbridgecaravans.co.uk/information/brochures And go back several years too.

P.S. It looks as if Rapido, have dropped a rear lounge layout from at least 2018 on?.

What type of auto, proper auto box or robotised manual like the Comformatic?
What type of van, overcab, low profile or A Class?

Why not just take the medical and keep your C1, I'm having a medical next week as I'll be 70 in a couple of months and my van is 4500kg.

Automatics!

Torque Converters

Mercedes 4G/5G/7G & 9G-Tronics - Number refers to gears
Fiat's New Torque Converter 9 Speed ZF Gearbox
Iveco HiMatic 8 Speed
New 6 Speed Transit

Robitised Manuals

SprintShift ("SprintShit") from Mercedes. Was rubbish, handed down to VW for their Mercedes Built Crafter and Re-Branded "ShiftMatic" (ShitMatic). No longer in Production as Mercedes went to 5G Tronic and onwards, 7-9 speed. VW now build the new Crafter and it has the DSG 8 Speed.

Fiat's ComfortMatic
Ford Transit (old version)

DSG

VW Caddy, Transporter and new Crafter. Gear Numbers Vary.

I think I have included most and got them all in the correct categories. I know nothing of American RV's other than The Mercedes Variants that is Mercedes Sprinter Dodge & Freightliner

The rear lounge / longitudinal layout is available on the Carthago Liner-for-Two, the Frankia “Plus” models and the rear lounge Le
Voyageur. It is a cost option on the Le Voyageur. We have ordered a Liner-for-Two and take delivery this month. Really excited!

The Rapido 8094df is a current model.

My Hymer has the Comformatic box. In the 4 years I have had it I have been very pleased with it. But then I realise that I am getting old and I am driving a commercial van for leisure. I no longer need to be the first off the lights or put the pedal to the metal when accelerating away from a roundabout.

What`s the basis for your aversion to the Sprint-shift?. I drove a fair few when an agency driver, and cannot say I had any issues with them?. We had it in a Minibus too on one occasion. There is a technique to driving them, not dissimilar to the Comfortmatic, smoother shifts are obtained by lightly backing off when you know they are about to shift. It was the same with my Smart. Not A "Critique" BTW, just curious. My Godsons BIL runs several on "White Van" delivery, he swears by them more than at them, so to speak.

Hmmm. I drive my Mitsubishi and Ford torque converter autos exactly as I would drive a manual, except without the gear change. No special technique needed.

No way you could run any of those at 3500kg.

I totally agree. Our liner is plated at 5600 Kg.

I was responding to the comment by Pete H about the lack of rear lounge models with longitudinal beds, rather than to the OP.

You might be interested in a Nu Venture Rio. Mine's small but perfectly formed. Based on a Peugeot Expert it's 2litre, 163 bhp with 6 speed auto and just under 3000kg
