Having a rethink about our trip in September,we was originally going to Germany and France but have now got 2 months for the trip so are thinking Northern Spain and Portugal. Can you recommend any aire type stopovers of interest near sea, rivers or lakes or interesting places we would also be staying on ACSI sites? We have 2 dogs so, if you know of any dog friendly places it would help.

A very nice aire, can be a bit busy at times and occasionally travellers arrive and do their thing ? but great walks round the lake and surrounding area for the dogs and a bar up the road (Have their own dogs) for a cold beer.

Foz de Arelho in Portugal, about 50 miles North of Lisbon. Right next to the beach on a tidal lagoon. Beautiful views out of your windscreen. 4€ without electricity or 6€ with.

Peso de Regua. Aire on the banks of the Douro River in the middle of the Port producing region. 3€ including electrics, water and drain on each pitch. Lovely views over the river. Town is nice and you can catch train or boat up the valley to view all the vinyards.

Caberceno in Northern Spain just outside Santander. Free Aire next to a wildlife reserve. You can view the elephants from outside. Fun watching them put to bed of an evening. You can drive through the reserve in car or motorhome to view all the animals. They also have a cable car system that allows you to view the animals from above.

Armacau de Pera and Alvor have good cheap Aires on the Algarve. And there are lots more.

Download and pay for the Campercontact app on your phone. Tens of thousands places listed throughout Europe.

just follow the coast. stay off main roads use the smaller normal roads .
i say get a mapamax map book of spain and portugal , it names just about every cove or beach area . far better than Michelin.
dont be in a hurry ,lots nice places .
might never get to portugal. there are so many nice places .
might only go a few miles along and find another nice place . then get up tomorrow and find another great place just a few miles further along. or one end of a village to the other end .
could be good surf running as well with september swells working .

Love Foz de Arelho

There are lots of stops along Costa verde, the issue is the weather, we have the same plan this time that we will go to Bordeaux area and consult El Tiempo before we decide which way to turn.

If you like wild why not give the Picos Europa a go

I also think the Bilbao aire is worth a stop for the view alone and although parts of Bilbao are a bit rough the old town is nice and the Guggenheim is a fantastic building.

Getting Better
Get the ACSI books and card they will save you a fair bit of money when you stay on a site and pay for its self in a week...
Also get and download Campercontact or searchforsites they are only around a fiver and it’s all we use for nice little free stop overs on the way.
Lots of French sites will be closing mid September so you may have to plan that bit but twinlakes are open all year... it’s a lovely time to go around Portugal at that time of year...

Happy travels...??
