Hello from Greece!

I have just bought a Transit/Hobby T650 AK GFLC 2008 model.
Previous owner who bought it from new used it for 2 years only. So the motorhome it’s been sitting in his open parking for 10 years!

Prices for motorhomes in Greece are much higher in respect to the ones of Europe.
Motorhomes are consider a luxury commodity and are heavily taxed.
A shame really as Greece is just perfect for camping.
So,it made only 1790 km!And it must be said that the previous owner made some wise additions to the motorhome.
Not that I can appreciated them my self now that I’m a newby. But they say 4 wheels at the back, and air suspension makes things easier in many aspects. As well as a tent and big storage room.
However been exposed to the weather had its toll to the body of the caravan. As well as the engine.
As I said it was unprotected from the Greek summer heat, and the rain in the winter.
Climbing to the roof I could see water paddle round the toilet roof window.Further to this it really didn’t make any sense to me,why the angle of the roof is such that all water from the rain will gather in the middle of the roof, Instead of finding its way off the roof??
So checking inside the motorhome I concentrated mostly at the place were the water consecration was at the roof. There was signs of humidity and inside the toilet the walls were slightly deformed
The rest of the inside looks as new.
Although the engine would start, I choose to tow it to the mechanic.

No need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that you do not want the 10 year old diesel circulating. Let alone the rest of possible reasons to cause a damage.Like I said it started, but it could not rev. For reasons we will see further on.

Firstly the mechanic concentrated to clean the fuel system. He removed the tank and thoroughly cleaned it. No need to say what was in there! He also clean the whole of the petrol system.
He also performed a routine service to the engine.

The 2 only difficult issues we came across was that the turbine was stuck, as well as the egr valve. Both were taken care from the mechanic who clean them and made them perform like they should.
No other serious issues.
So after that straight to the tire shop for 6 new tires.
I fitted these.

Next to the hobby dealer. This engine 2.4td it’s with the 140bhp,and I was very pleased to feel the ample power of it on my way.

At the dealers I pointed out the issue with the roof humidity and the toilet room.
First thing he said is that there is a piece missing from the roof window of the toilet??The dome part, on top of the existing piece that It was there.

It must had flew away while driven from the previous owner. That said, after I made my own research to find out that this is a common problem for a period of time within the manufacture date of my motorhome and some other. Very well mentioned in a few topics here. There was a recall also regarding this issue here:

The dealer however said nothing about knowing this issue to me.Or for the recall

He only said they’ve somehow have a way to take care this issue. They given a dome specimen to an outside fiberglass shop, who made a mold for the them. So they could fix it at the 1/3 of the price of the complete unit.So we agreed in doing that.

Next day however when I did my studying and came back to them with some facts of the recall, and also from what I could read from other oweners in European Motorhome sites, they didn’t want to hear nothing. Not even bother to check the links I gave them.

In fact they were quite straight forward to me that there was never any recall issued about this problem. And that they are a long time hobby dealer and know very well there job.End of conversation.

This really left me wondering. I did not made any demands or something. Guarantee period is long finished.
Off course they could had contacted the owner at that time to bring him for a check.
I was just making conversation with them about something I read out, on my effort to see if this flying piece of the window it’s a common problem elsewhere.
So is there a chance they did not know about this recall in Greece? As said earlier there are only a few motor homes in the hand of Greeks.
Why they reacted like that?
I’m I missing something here been a newby?
Isn’t what I attached a factory recall?
Thank you. Sorry for any mistakes in my English.

As you say Greece is a great place for Motorhomes only taken our van down there once hope to go again soon.
Hope the damp problem isn't too serious, need proper investigating to make sure there is no rotten woodwork behind the panels.

Your English is a lot better than my Greek! :giggle:
The article that you linked to, refers specifically to a panoramic roof window above the driving cab which is different to the small window normally found in a toilet.
This thread has some photos (post number 24) of one being replaced

Hi and another big w2f .
I think the most comprehensive introduction I have seen in a long time.
No apology needed, your English is so good, understand everything you explained.
Your recovery of the van and subsequent work all makes sense.
When we bought our 10 year old van with Iveco/Fiat 2.3 engine, very low kms the egr valve was on the way out, turbo probably stuck as your garage found.
You are well on the way to restoring a beautiful van.I wish you many happy miles and smiles.

Thank you all for your welcoming and kind remarks
@ Annie, you reminded me the expression “it’s all Greek to me”
Also thank you for pointing me out that the recall was for another roof window of our vans.Searching further into that, came across the below statement from a relevant thread. That clarified the confusion in my head.

“My van is 2007. Hobby recalled it last year for the over-cab window replacement. I still believe the bathroom outer lid loss is a dangerous fault and should be subject of a similar recall”

So now I know that the dealer was right insisting to his story that no recall was made for the roof dome Window in the bathroom.

I forgot to mention at my first post that I also replaced the batteries of the van.
I was however surprised to find 2 starter batteries under the seat on the LHS,and one gel battery for the consumptions under the RHS seat.
I expect the other way?

I cannot help on the batteries question, sorry, but lots on here know a lot about them. I know Emmit has a Hobby but different model and I know Lenny HB very good with electrics amongst others so I have sent them an alert and maybe someone will have a look at your photos.

I don't know much about Transits but it is common to have 2 starter batteries one is for the starter the other runs the engine/chassis auxiliaries.

The Gel battery was the habitation/living battery, it looks like you have replaced it with a flooded battery. If so you need to change the charger setting or you will fry it on the Gel setting also it will need venting to outside of the van.
