Apple Motorhome

TL/DR: a few nuggets and a lot of grit.

Just joined the forum and this is the first thread I’ve read. OP had a valid point about wanting to simplify technology and about half a dozen posts helpfully responded to that, highlighting HA as a potential solution, something I’ve recently done in my van and I’m happy to share my experiences with anyone who’s up for a discussion.
But the other 80 posts are mostly people criticising others who don’t share their precise worldview of exactly what amount and combination of tech is “correct”, something I don’t think the OP was after. I hope other threads I go on will provide more of the “fun” that the URL claims.

You've just used one of five complimentary posts. If you don't like this thread, and felt the need to to make your first post a moan, you probably won't enjoy MotorhomeFun at all. So please don't subscribe unless you are absolutely sure it's worth it to you. Thanks

Hi Greenapples2019 and welcome here.

There is a lot of fun here, but a lot of serious debate as well. Jim who runs the forum has always been clear that treads going off topic is allowed and is a key feature of the forum. Indeed, a good deal of knowledge has come out of those tangents, thread creep, or whatever you want to call it. However, its important that any debate stays civil and stays within the forum rules on how to treat other members. In that respect it is completely different from any other 'moderated' forum, where often if something is said that the forum admins personally do not like, it gets taken down.

There is a report button on every post and you are encouraged to use it if you feel 'attacked', or see anything else of concern.

Many of us have been here for many years and are very protective of this place. We also know many other Funsters in person. That has to be in the many hundreds. This really is a special forum especially where helping out others is concerned, so please enjoy.

You don't need all that sh**.

My Trauma heating system can be linked to my mobile phone so I can turn it on from my bed ...or down the road. I've never felt the need to set it up.

WiFi? Just use a hotspot on your phone (any old phone will do)

Android play? My van has it but I prefer to stick my phone in a holder attached to my windscreen.

I could go on.
Each to their own.

Actually we find the geofencing on our central heating system at home really useful. Ditto the security system of geofencing on our motorhome feels sort of comforting. Ditto on the apple tags which we have in our luggage . And several other features have become more the norm now, are useful but we can understand why some would feel more uncomfortable.

I don't feel 'uncomfortable' i just don't feel the need. For example - when we go away I turn the electric, water and heating off. We don't have an alarm. I know some people have cameras etc to access whats going on at home while they are away. For me I prefer to forget all about it and enjoy my time away from home. If anything serious happens my neighbours can contact me.

Maybe you missed the point, or I wasn’t clear for which I apologise. All the points I mentioned are related to making it easier for us when we are away from home to understand the status of the motorhome ie it has moved whilst we were out sightseeing, the temperature at home helps me to keep the levels to where I want them to be and if no one at home it turns off to help save the planet in our small way. These small things help us and it sounds like you don’t need any which is not my issue.

You’re right Jim, my first post did contain a moan and I reflected on the irony before posting, but having seen how many other people were putting forward their take on things I thought it was a safe space to do that, and that as a newbie I was allowed to express my perceptions of the site. But the first part was a genuine offer to engage positively on the subject of the thread, to add to the discussion and being a collaborative person that is what I wanted to do and that is why I signed up. And if that is what the site it about then I will enjoy it and engage positively.

A very good point - so I have just created a Social Group where those interested in Home Assistant can share experiences and ideas.

That can be an area for technology to “run riot” and probably over complicate things to the delight of those involved!!

I have just finished a useful project to integrate my Pepwave router in to home assistant I will post it on the Social Group to get things going!

That's really helpful, thank you, I look forward to a lively, helpful and positive discussion.

I can't speak for others but for me the goal is to automate the boring stuff. I don't want to turn lights/heaters/fans/devices on or off, I don't want to think about or monitor what needs filling/emptying/charging/unplugging/maintenance, I just want to enjoy my time in the van. So I like that by closing the bedroom door at night the living area lights turn off, the security system comes on, the bedroom light comes on for 10 mins, the speaker lets me know if I've set an alarm for the morning, the heater goes into night mode and my phone turns on DoNotDisturb mode. That's not to play the big "I am", just to show that I share with most people the desire for technology not to interfere with my time in the van, I'm just achieving that goal by using the tech rather than avoiding it.
