I was about to order the Victron Orion Tr Smart as a DC/DC charger, and later add a new MPPT as I upgrade the solar, but came across the

'40A REDARC BCDC1240D MPPT Smart Battery-Battery Charger - with sensitive charging voltages'.

This seems to do everything the Orion does (I think) and has the MPPT controller builtin too, so only one source of charge at any one time to the batteries.

Not seen the Redarc mentioned here before so thought I'd ask!

After many false starts on the hab batteries (deciding I mean), I am upgrading to two 100ah Lithiums (possibly a 3rd a little later) and a 2000w inverter, so the DC/DC is now essential. I'm keeping the current 100w solar going through the Sargent EC700 as it has the capability to charge the cab battery too, more solar (+200w / 300w) will need the extra MPPT.

Thoughts?

Cheers

Hi, I know you asked this question a long time ago but thought it worth mentioning that it came as a standard fitting in our new Benimar. From subsequent reading up it seems to be a very capable unit with its inbuilt MPPT controller and support for lithium batteries. In addition, I had a query on the lights displayed and the UK reseller supporting the redarc products were very quick to respond. Did you go with Redarc in the end?

Just had the smaller BCDC1225 fitted in my Pilote to override the smart alternator and pleased to say works a treat.

The dealer retrofitted one to my Le Voyageur - it worked but they never used thick enough wiring and it burnt the wiring and nearly set fire to the van. Not the Redarc fault. I was shocked when Vanbitz presented me with the melted bits and pieces when they fitted the Victron unit
