We bought our new motorhome in October and the renewal is due, the Comfort quote has only gone up £20 , we could save £65 by not bothering with the breakdown bit.

For fun I phoned round for quotes, Safeguards first effort was £850, which was £500 more than Comfort! I spluttered a bit and she then realised she’d forgotten the NCD but that still only brought it down to £544 , I politely declined. Having spent half an hour by then being asked daft questions like does my van have a sink and a bed I was feeling a bit disheartened.

She then kept asking me how much of the time we would be spending in Europe, I said all of it as I didn’t want to go to Morocco or Turkey in the next year. She wasn’t amused as she meant rather than the UK, I pointed out that the UK was part of Europe. I wasn’t trying to be funny, I really thought I was being very clear.

I think we will stick with Comfort but are just dithering about the breakdown, we are going to Serbia, Hungary and Slovenia so are just wondering whether to pay the £65 for peace of mind or is Fiat Assist OK, thanks in anticipation, or vain hope...

I used fiat assist earlier this year . They responded quite quick and in fact it was a RAC man that turned up. No complaints about the breakdown service

I always have independent breakdown cover in case of road traffic accident, which I am not sure Fiat Assist would help then

That’s interesting , I hadn’t thought about a RTA with Fiat Assist. Mind you I hadn’t thought about it with my normal breakdown cover, I must read the small print. Thank you.

Our new Burstner (Sept 2019) only has Fiat assist for the first year?

Here is a link to fiat site it says you have two years
Thank you, I know what the paperwork says now as we also had it on our last van. I’m interested in peoples first hand experience when they’ve used it in anger, in particular abroad. I know when it was first around there were a few problems actually getting in contact with them, incorrect numbers and then when you did , hanging on for ages. That sort of thing. Thanks again though.

We have continued with our breakdown cover as I would not expect Fiat to deal with a puncture

This is what the website says about Fiat Camper Assist:

“In the case of unforeseen events* (breakdown, fault, accident, puncture of one or more tyres, flat battery, etc.), the call centre puts you in touch with Fiat Camper Assistance, the roadside assistance team reserved for motorhome customers, active in 51 countries 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Also, if necessary, Europ Assistance works as an interpreter and remains in direct contact with the customer until the operation is completed and the motorhome starts off again.”

It says it includes accidents and punctures. I extended the warranty and the Fiat Assist to 5 years when I purchased. Part of my calculation was the saving on breakdown cover.

carolyn asks an interesting question about first hand experience.

We haven’t purchased separate breakdown cover for our two new vans during first 2 years.

Fiat Assist helped us with a puncture whilst in the Uk and the RAC came out to change it pretty quickly. We also had an engine warning message whilst in Lisbon. This needed a recovery from the campsite they said and we did have to go through the farce of having a recovery truck trying to get us on his back when the vehicle was smaller than our own and the second larger truck that was subsequently sent didn’t even want to try after seeing our vehicle so we ended up driving to the nearest Fiat Professional garage ourselves (which was excellent).

However, I don’t think that was Fiats fault and you have to say that on both occasions they did well.

We broke down on the last hairpin going up Alpe D'HUEZ, caused havoc ?. A local garage attended on behalf of Fiat, and because we were there to see the Tour de France, took us to the top and parked us up for 6 days. Then as arranged, collected us on the Monday and took us to Grenoble where the Fiat garage was waiting.
