Does this go on positive or negative side?

All my negative wires under bonnet are brown...

CAUTION - STD UK auto wiring suggests...

Brown normally positive plus there seems to be a dirty great fuse in-line. Black is negative, or ground. Questions:
  • Where DID it live?
  • Assuming it's broken off, where is the other end of the broken spade terminal connected?
  • Where does it go?
  • What is the vehicle?

Hmmm looking at the picture there's a red lead in the back ground that is 100% a positive lead, so this lead might well be the negative, and yes the end terminal is broken off

Looked at it again this is the main negative or earth wire

By the looks of things a large spade has broken off the end of this cable so worth looking around the engine compartment for the other end. Due to the size of the cable I would be looking at the starter motor and working backwards. Good Luck.

All my negative cables are brown and looking at my POS side they are all red I've put a new crimp thing with a hole in it on and fired it onto the negative side. Nothing has gone bang yet..... no idea what its for though.....

Im sure at one point it was on the negative post. I had the battery changed the other week and it must have snapped when the garage took the battery out. Having said that, thats just me assuming!! wonder what would happen if i fire it onto the positive side?!!

no idea what it does, the vehicle started and drove without it attached. It may have something to do with the battery charger that sorts the leisure batteries out and maybe trickles the starter battery?

vehicle is my motorhome on an Iveco chassis

If the vehicle starts and runs without this cable, you have to assume it is an accessory of some kind. With a heavy cable like this I could guess at a large inverter but that would be a guess. Tracing the cable is a no go I assume.

If it isn't meant to be on Pos it would trip the resetable fuse/breaker in the black box.
The breaker makes me think its 'positve'.

Connecting to Neg will do nothing if a second wire is already connected to negative.

Hss the vehicle been converted from another use? Police van / ambulance?? Mine has lots of extra cables are remnants of a previous life.

Cheers James

what's the worst that can happen if i fire it over to the positive side i wonder.......?!!

no its a N&B flair 2006 on an iveco daily.

Ill have a proper look in the daylight. the rest of the lug may well be on the pos side.

The broken off bit must be somewhere. Bearing in mind how chopped around this moto has been I would hang back bn until I found the bit it snapped off or made really sure what it did.

I just reread your post. sorry for asking the same question twice after you answered it!

Fire may be the only solution!!!

Is that black plastic thing a Midi fuse holder? Is there a fuse inside, if so is it still intact or has it blown? It's unusual to put a fuse in the negative wire, so that brown wire ought to be positive.

However the German automotive colour code has brown as negative, as Hymer owners soon find out.

If the fuse has blown, nothing will happen whether you connect to negative or positive, so that fact is not an indication that it's right.

When you've checked the fuse, measure the voltage. If it's the same as the starter battery when the engine is running, it's the split charge relay feed to the leisure battery. If it's even higher than that when the engine is running it might be a B2B. If not it might be a positive feed to a fridge or an inverter.

Looks like a resettable fuse/breaker to me. You can see the reset lever in a shallow recess at the bottom.

But... I just looked again and I think the 'lever' is just a moulding on the case.

I’ll poke about tomorrow

just found a photo I took when I bought the van. The wire was indeed attached to the positive.!! Only i can have a van with the same colour wire on both terminals!!!!!!

Should it look like that on the inside? If not what should I throw in there?

Just checked again and wire is broken....

Looks like one of these to me.
which takes a Midi fuse
But Mega fuses look much the same, only bigger in length with a larger hole, so check first.

Bonus thanks. Ill order some 30 & 50 and start with 30 amp!

Time to buy some red and black insulation tape. Happy wrapping for Christmas 😂😂

Before putting a fuse in and connecting I would trace it from the fuse holder to see what it powers.
