When I go to bed, I turn off my phone connection to the data network and WiFi. One morning the phone pinged me with a message via Facebook. On checking I discovered that WiFi was back on.
Goigling the problem I found that tge phone settings can allow the phone to search for networks to you have previously used, turn on the WiFi and connect.

So even after turning off WiFi. The phone is still scanning.

Big brother?

Wifi settings? Certainly on IPhone I can “de-select” individual favourite networks so that it won’t look for them, but if the Wi-Fi is off on my phone, it really is off

Edit - I see that you found the solution already.

Always put mine in Aeroplane mode at night then data & WiFi are off.
Was running Android 10 not had any problems, phone updated to Android 11 a few days ago still seems OK.

What's the problem? What if someone wants you in the night?

Why is it big brother. They've probably just set the default the way least likely to cause a problem and least likely to use mobile data.

I get the answers, but it would appear that its still looking for networks even when you have told it to turn wifi off..

Was WiFi off off or only off until next day?
The latter is a what happens in apple iOS if you use the shortcut control panel instead of going to the full settings’ area.

My phone has never been switched off in ten years apart from if it's needed it for upgrades.
Why would you?
I meet quite a few people who I have tried to ring and when you ask why they didn't answer they say I only turn it on if I want to ring someone.

I find it quite a useful feature, but you can turn it off: go to Settings, Connections, WiFi, Advanced (via the 3 dots at the top) and de-select Turn on WiFi Automatically

We never turn off our phones or the wifi but don't sleep with them nearby

Can someone please advise if we are doing it wrong or a reason why you would turn off the wifi.
I do exactly the same and have no problems.👍

Buy a Chinese phone, not only does it automatically start the wifi, it also reports back to the manufacturer with statistics regularly without any user interaction. They call it checking for updates, but security researchers say the data the phone sends is not needed for that simple check

I think they are all made in china, but even so I don't see that just turning it off at night would make any difference.

It's not just the Chinese. Didn't you read the Snowden reports? The Government response was not to stop it, but to pass laws to make it all legal. Nowadays you can't even take the battery out of the phone to stop it working. The only way to stop a phone from communicating is to enclose it in a metal box, with RF seals on the lid.

If Location Accuracy is set to high that allows the phone to scan for WiFi etc connections to supplement the GPS fix.

If it continues, after following the instructions in your link, I would suspect you have given an app permission to control Wifi, once you have given an app permission to control a feature\setting on your phone you have little control over the status of that feature (your camera, your microphone, your location, your wifi, your photos etc etc)

Cheers
Red.

Samsung and a few others are Korean

I turn off data when I'm not using it/providing a hotspot, to save battery life as on the odd occasion I've forgotten I'll get a flipping 'ding' in the night when a notification arrives! I can't put my phone on aeroplane mode or DND as I need to be reachable in case my Mum's care home, a hospital, family etc need to contact me. I also don't turn my phone off at all except if required for a reset etc.
