i am fully aware that a lot of people have 2 single beds in the rear of their van (and being nosey i have asked owners and fully understand why) and some people have a proper double bed BUT
what is the purpose of the current options of 2 high single beds with various bits of sponge in between that pretends to be a double ?
some of them have heater controls underneath so that if you put the puzzle of centre sponge pieces together the controls are now not accessible
we looked at one today and if you made the double properly then the steps would block access to the toilet !
a sheet to fit a corner cut mattress is bad enough but one to fit two singles that may be a double or more likely two singles with a half length sponge bit inbetween might be a little tricky
is it a gimmick or do people actually get in bed and put the rest of the double bed together behind them after they are in?

We have a Ton-tiki 635 and use the beds as two singles but leave the middle filler in place.

We have single fixed beds
We remove centre section when we are using
Son and DiLaw use as double when they use

Removable/ split mattresses improve flexibility if garage when travelling

With any MH purchase, no matter which layout, flexibility is on of the key factors linked to longevity of ownership
I have learnt that the hard (expensive) way

Not into motorhome DIY but our infill mattresses when converted to an emperor double was in theory just what we wanted however was uncomfortable for whoever was on the outside as the mattresses gradually migrated to the entrance so you fell between them (parts of you that is). Having tried velcro and various other solutions that didn't work I made a simple cross member to bridge the gap (entrance) out of 4 x 2 timber that held them in place - perfect as long as you remember to sand it down!

We have never installed the center bit of the bed. It remains in its wrapper under the bed in the spare bedroom. Pair of singles is what we wanted.

@BU
We have 2 very comfortable single beds, not sure which make and model of MH you're referring too when you say "various bits of sponge in between that pretends to be a double". Ours has 1 section c40x40cm made of the same material and fabric as the mattresses, which when used (granted not very often), does not block the step.

However, like so many funsters I wish we'd done a bit more research before committing to the current MH and parting with a small fortune, and choose an island bed, Having said that there are compromises which to make with an Island bed i.e. having the toilet and shower in the sleeping section, and both very cramped compared to the standard separate ablutions one finds in other layouts.

our adria twin has a fixed rear double, which has a step to get in, no issues thus far. we looked an an autosleeper a few years back, may have been a 'symbol' we asked the guy to show us how to assemble the bed, after watching him struggle with all the xtra infill bits which had their own cupboard i told him to not worry and we crossed that model off our list, for the faff and falling into the gaps....

We've got a pact, that the first time either of us suggest single beds in the van we'll get divorced. As we get older it's getting close, there is only so much snoring, sweating and farting a man can put up with. :D

with you there brother.............:ROFLMAO:

We've had transverse double beds in a few MHs/campers but I found trying to 'lob' myself over hubby already in bed to get to the far side of a transverse one wasn't easy ... I developed a sort of high-jump flop but getting out was much more difficult as it was like clambering over Mount Everest! :D

Now we have 2 single beds with the centre section made up of 3 cushions, 2 of which we leave in place as the dogs tend to sleep there; it can still be used as a transverse double with the existing cushions, or we can add a third board and cushion above the steps to make a massive king size but that's not the reason we bought it - we wanted 2 singles with the easy access that steps give.

When we first bought the camper we did use it as a transverse bed (without the third cushion) as that's the bedding we had with us and it was very comfy and roomy even without a mattress topper in place.

Our heater control is over the sliding door so we have to get out of bed to turn it on anyway ... well hubby does when he gets up to make the tea! :D

:Eeek: you're sleeping with men now !!

Didn't bother ordering the extra bits that make our twins into a double, if we want a double we just use the drop down bed at the front.
No problem with sheets, fitted sheets are really easy to make, I made ours, I did have to break man tradition and read the sewing machine instructions.

Can someone please expain how a woman can understand a sewing machine and an overlocker yet they don't understand something simple like how a car engine works.

Selective information absorption! My hubby cannot understand why we women maybe reluctant to drive a 3.5 motorhome as too big but happily drive a much larger horsebox down tiny lanes to horse show in fields loaded with a few tonnes of horses.

Need and Want:D

We also have the same agreement :). We couldn't start or end our day without a cuddle so have a nice large double bed :). Think we'd get lonely in single beds!

What's that? must be football, can't stand the game.:D

If you think that`s hard?. Try the rugby rules. So many changes since I played, I think it`s a different game!.

As far as beds are concerned, I can see the attraction of singles, especially for those who have "night-time needs". What I cannot understand is the current obsession with High Garages, incurring the need for oxygen equipment to get up into bed? ( and a long drop down in the dark). Sticking a load of heavy equipment behind the rear axle is IMV a recipe for disaster?.

Don't they use square balls now so they don't have to run after them so much as they don't roll?

Main reason for having singles is the big garage, wouldn't want our expensive bikes on a rack. The higher the garage the easier it is to get the bikes in and out we have about a foot clearance above the bars.
With our garage fully loaded with e-bikes, washing macine, spare wheel, tools & all the other junk we are still 400 kg below rear axle limit.

AH!, That won`t bother me then, My (T)rusty steed is not worth nicking!. My washing machine is plumbed in at home. The "spare" is in the Garage (at home) and the tool box sits in the never used "passenger" door recess which is to high for SWMBO, to access. You must have some Mass behind the rear axle though, and this may have an effect on stability and lighten the steering?.

Loading on front axle on this van is around 300 - 400 kg more than on the previous van, having water tank central helps. Also rear overhang is quite short compared to a lot of vans.

Can't remember why we ever needed a double bed.

Similar for us. Also big high garage - step up to bed is no problem.

Our king-size is tranverse. Only disadvantage is Basia will not sleep on inside and only I am the one to get up for a pee. An island bed would be ideal, but I was single when I bought the MH and we manage, but could not without the cuddles;):D
