Our 2022 plan will see us spend 6.5 months on the continent. We’re going to spend almost 3 months exploring Romania, Croatia, Albania and Montenegro (which helps with the 90-day Schengen rules) before descending into Greece.

Comfort won’t cover us for Albania and Montenegro. Has anyone travelling these two counties and, if so, what did you do about insurance?

Many thanks (y)

Thanks for the info. Comfort have Croatia in their list. I wonder if I can get short term insurance for Albania and Montenegro from another provider, just for the period we’re there.

Saga or Nationwide (via their account) provide the most comprehensive insurance cover.
Spain in the west to the Urals in the east and south including Turkey.
Morocco also available on request.

Great, thanks for that.

Too young for Saga, it seems! Also, Albania and Montenegro are not included in the their list.

You can buy insurance for both countries at the border. 3rd party only and probably not worth the paper it's written on but at least you're legal.

Yes, my research discovered the same. My van won't even be 6 months old by the time we near Albania, so travelling 3rd party isn't an option for me.

Maybe we'll take a different route than originally planned

Interesting one. Their website says not included, but great that it's in your policy.

I'm 8 years shy of being allowed to join Saga!

We escorted pre Covid the Camping and Caravan club Balkans Tour and some members did have trouble getting cover. Two years ago cover was available via The Caravan Club depending on the underwriter chosen at the quote stage. This was normally a AXA policy.

You are getting confused with breakdown insurance.

I reckon it will be near impossible to get cover from a mainstream provider. The issue is that any insurer is going to have near impossible task of recovering costs from an individual in one of these countries if the 3rd party was at fault. That means any loss is going to end up that door. They are more likely to offer 3rd party insurance as in that case the boot is on the foot of the claimant.

The legal costs of pursuing claims is too high and relationships with insurance companies in these countries is non existent.

You would have thought that there were specialist companies who would but I'd expect cost to be high if you were there for long periods.

If all the insurance companies were so definite that the risk was high I think I wouldn't fancy taking our MH there and risking both it and our no claims!

We traveled ( very carefully ) through Albania and Montenegro on the third party border insurance a few years ago as we couldn’t buy fully comp. We met people on that trip that had bought insurance on the continent where full European cover is apparently normal, how you would go about that I don’t know, perhaps a relative living in France or Germany could help.

Yes on my green cards there are no countries left out whatsoever.

It appears so but ......

When I discussed motorhome insurance including breakdown cover with Saga I was sold and accepted on the basis that both policies covered the same area. I have lodged a complaint as I believe the policy was missold.

Me neither and neither do I have any plans to, unless I can get proper insurance.

Add Morocco to the list of no nos as well. Sadly

I have also been scratching my head with this conundrum as I am also with Comfort, however, we want to drive from Greece through Albania and Montenegro. I have received a rough quote from Sterling Insurance for £300+ for 30 days. Has anyone else used Sterling is this a viable (albeit expensive) option? Apparently they are unable to give me a final quote before 30 days of departure. BTW...did you get an answer on whether Saga or Nationwide can help?

We changed plans and have decided to go through Romania and Bulgaria instead.

The trip doesn't start until end of May and the new MH hasn't arrived yet, so I've not researched insurance any further. Saga is for over 50s according to their website, so I won't be able to go with them.

Thanks for quick response. I will contact Saga and post if I make any progress. Good luck on MH arriving soon. Our trip starts early May and we might also end up going via Bulgaria and Serbia. If anyone else has thoughts on Sterling or any other insurer for Baltics Countries, it would be much appreciated.

We are avoiding these countries and heading to Turkey, after touring Western Europe for around 80 days, via Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.

This is purely because our vehicle insurance doesn't cover us without buying an additional policy, which you can buy at the border if you can't get it sorted in the UK. Not sure if it would be worth the paper it's written on however?? Not worth the risk to us just in case something should happen whilst only covered 3rd party. We can't afford an uninsured write off. We are with Saga.
