Please can anyone give me some advice/recommendations on the best ferry from Northern Spain to the UK, preferbly Portsmouth.

I'm in my car, and would appreciate any help especially with discount codes, having never used ferries before.

I'm travelling up from the Algarve... many thanks in advance.

Les.

The only ferry I would use on that route would be Brittany Ferries.
Either
Bilbao to Portsmouth or Santander Portsmouth

I've recently travelled the other way Plymouth (home town) to Santander
Currently

You may tray asking on the forum for a friends a family discount code.

I would book direct with BF and not through a 3rd party

Hi les,

I’ve sent you a PM.

If you are coming up from the Algarve, usually the best option is Santander.

Santander has two options.

Santander-Plymouth around 23 hours overnight on Pont Aven and is the cheapest fare option.

Santander-Portsmouth around 33 hours , 2 night crossing on Galicia.

Bilbao only has one route & Vessel. Galicia’s sister ship, Salamanca, 32-33 hours, 2 night sailing.

We used to like the Cap Finistere Bilbao route that was 24 hours (except Sunday outbound ( called in at roscoff or Brest for change of crew)). But that’s gone now.

We don’t like the new Chinese ships and the two night crossings. So we opt for the Plymouth-Santander route these days.

Let me know if you need any help or assistance.

Wow.. such quick responses, been sent three codes already, so grateful to everyone..(are they all the same discount?) now to do some checking.

It seems that there are no cabins available at the moment, what are the chair things like (I'll have all my camping kit with me).

Your welcome

Some codes may be expiring soon. All the same discount

I would get lynched in a chair with my snoring

The Bilbao/Portsmouth Tuesday crossing is only one night on board but does arrive late on Wednesday. Depends on your plans when you reach Portsmouth.

What are the 'chairs' like?

It’s is, I forgot about that. But still 32 ish hours
We came back that route last week and for the last three/four hours (wasn't checking constantly) we were down to about ten knots. On arrival a BF ship was just leaving so I guess our boat, Salamanca, could do the journey a lot quicker if a berth was available. Interestingly Salamanca was in Cherbourg the next morning.

I’ve done the overnight from Roscoff to Plymouth and I spent all night going around the near empty ship trying all the seats and the only one I got an hour or so sleep was on a bench seat in the cafeteria….

There was a couple of lads sleeping by the reception on camp beds…

So if the Spain trip is anything like it then bring your own camp bed…👍🏼😎

I would be very grateful for a code too! I was a member of the club voyage a few years back but its lapsed and I don't travel enough now to warrant it BUT would love to use someones guest code.

I would also be grateful for a code for BF
Many thanks Tony

Thanks for all the advice/replies, booked a crossing and a chair .

We used the reclining chair lounge on our way back in April on Galicia. They’re ok ish?
Mr B slept like a log but I didn’t! The seats do recline but it would be wise to take a pillow and blanket for extra comfort plus earphones/plugs for the snoring 😂

Yes, We have a Plymouth - Santander booked in October.

Looking at a return

I would prefer the Bilbao, as it’s easier for us returning from Javea. But if it docks on time in Portsmouth at 20:45. Then an hour to unload. I have a long drive north.

Take a blow up bed and find a corner. The long bench seats in the communal areas are more comfortable than the ‘Comfy recliner’ chairs.

I snore, the last time I did a crossing where we couldn’t get a cabin, I think I emptied the lounge……so my son tells me, but I was fast asleep. 🤷‍♂️
