My husband sadly passed away so I am going to sell our 10 month old Eldiss van. Does anyone have advice on the best way to do this - dealer, private sale etc

Sorry for your loss. I think selling privately if you can be bothered will get you the most return.

Sorry for your loss why not try a broker like motor home depot they will deal with all the potential buyers and I think they just charge a commission which will take the hassle away from you and probably get you a better price than a dealer would offer or advertise it on here

Very sorry for your sad loss.

The easiest and quickest way to sell it would be to a dealer..........but he will want to make a profit on it so he may offer you many thousands less than you could get by selling it yourself. It could be £5000 less.

Firstly, you could try to sell it on here. There is a Classified Section, see the bar at the top of screen. But you could also put more details on this thread, and you will probably get some funsters interested.

A picture paints a thousand words. Good luck.

I too am very sorry for your sad loss. As the van is quite new, it may be worth approaching the dealer you got it from; but suggest you're accompanied by a colleague to ensure you're not being hoodwinked. Obviously, the aforementioned selling privately or through a broker could get you more dosh, but unless you're confident, could also lead to some pitfalls.
Have you considered keeping it and going solo? A lot of widows and widowers (as well as divorcees) do.

Sorry to hear the sad news on your loss.

Private sale may re-coup the most in value BUT you have the hassle of dealing with lots of people and sadly some time wasters.
There is a demand for motorhomes at present and a shortage of stock. If it was me, I would contact as many dealers as possible and see what they offer. Nothing to loose and if you decide to sell the sale will be quicker and safer.

As mentioned, you could always place it on here first in case a member is interested. However, you still need to establish a price.

So sorry for your loss.
Take it slowly if you are able , the market is good at the moment, as Irnbru says private sale is likely to get you a best price, lots of advice on here that will help you do that , including how to ensure good payment. Why not try the forum first, theres bound to be someone looking . the classifieds section.

Dealers need stock at the moment and you’ll lose a bit over a private deal but a good dealer will make it easy for you. worth making a few phone calls to dealers, , nothing to lose there. Mh funsters up your way may know some reputable dealers?
Obviously depends on your needs at the moment but it should sell quickly, hope you stay with us in one way or another, take care.

Really sorry to hear your news.
Selling to a dealer would be the easiest sale, although you wont get the best price.

If you buy a copy of MMM magazine, the back pages are full of adverts with dealers details who are crying out for stock, distance no problem.

Condolences on your loss it must be a hard time for you a respected dealer on this site is Simon-Alan Kerr he may be able to help you and worth speaking with

How about popping it on the classifieds on here first and see what happens.
I would also avoid motorhome depot, I base that on past experience.

Sorry for your loss.

Chatting to our dealers valuation man he reckoned a good ball park for depreciation was 20% (the vat) and, if under £60k purchase cost £3k per year, if over £60k then £5k per year when using a dealer. Right now things are a bit silly, but it sounds like you will perhaps do better than you may expect from a dealer but not by a significant amount.

It is really going to be a question of have you anyone you can trust to help you through the process as either way at this time especially it is going to be fraught and stressfull.

You can leave it but if it goes over that first twelve months that is another chunk of cash gone.

If you go to the dealer first on a just getting a price out of them you will soon find out what the starting price is. Then you can decide if you want to go down the private sales route or just wrap it up quickly.(Edit. Just noticed tonka suggested this above, not sure how I missed it).

One thing you need to do is verify the probate status, as everything else of significant value even if you have joint wills should be addressed in the same way with other assets. Please if needed seek legal advice on this. If there is a will, the executors should be able to help and should be helping you already.

Best wishes for a successful resolution.

I echo the sentiments about not jumping to sell, unless you need to. Perhaps you could try a couple of local rallies to see if you might be happy motor homing in the future?

My gu feel would be to try on classifieds here first - better price than a dealer and a safer, restricted market.

Selling privately will bring a lot of headache with time wasters, no shows, etc etc, only you know whether you are up to dealing with all that at this sad time. If not, going to a dealer will cause you a lot less headache, but may result in a lower price. You are the best judge of what is right for you.

Many many thanks for all the advice. The offer of 20% less than we paid for it 10 months ago ties in with what the dealer has offered. That makes them extremely expensive holidays. I shall have to weigh up all the pros and cons. Once again thanks to you all for your advice

With the way prices have gone up over the last year you should be able to get at the least what you paid for it. A 20% reduction is taking the Michael.

Really sorry for your loss and I realise that you have made a decision to sell, but if you can drive it is it worth you going away in it for a few days, there is still a big world out there and if your circumstances are such that you may need to take a breather, then out in a Motorhome could give you that space. Forgive me but decisions taken so soon after a loss are often regretted.

Was’nt someone on here trying to buy an Eldis van a few weeks ago but due to incompetence either by the dealer or more likely the DVLA.
I would try and put an ad on the forum classified, it’s got to be worth a try now you know what one dealer will give you.
My mum had a similar situation 50 years ago when dad suddenly died, he had a camper at the time.
