It'll be easy they said ?? well apart from discovering he (Horace, now renamed Boris) can climb, roll over on his back and move much faster than we were told!! Ruby says "he won't doodle dash or play ball ??? which is no good to me a lonely cockapoo down to one measly walk a day"??

Awww I love tortoises. Had a lovely one when I was a tot... but he ran away. :(

We had one years ago, inherited from my wife's gran. Also called Horace. He used to try and walk up the kids slide and got nowhere fast. Then one year he disappeared. As the years went by I used to think that I would find an empty shell in the garden but never did. We often wondered what happened, no postcards or ransom notes!

Morvan, I knew we had something in common, ours ran away, having climbed out of his enclosure. Well that's what my dad told me , we were always a bit hard up, and we had some funny tasting stews.

I think they hibernate in the soil sometimes and forget to wake up. :(. My poor dad had to move the shed because I was so upset and I thought he was stuck under it (the tortoise not my dad) .... but he wasn't. :( rest in peace Clive.

You called a tortoise CLIVE!!!! No wonder he legged it......?

We had terrapins and they had very unique names, big one, little one and you guessed it, middle one, gave us hours of entertainment

My grand daughter who lives in Menorca goes and feeds them in the wild. We thought she was joking when she first told us, but she took us to see them,

We had one as a child, dad drilled a hole in the shell and had it on string. Still made escapes though. Thinking about how cruel was that!

We used to have a tortoise sanctuary near where we live.

Unfortunately, they were made to shut down by the council as they did not have a 'wild animal' licence!

The owners were such lovely people, you could visit free of charge and have talks by the enthusiastic owners.

Didn't think you could have pet tortoises now?

Owner died and he needed a home desperately as he was out of hibernation, wandering around in a cold outside shed. Owner's cleaner (my friend) was asked by relatives who live on mainland to find him a home. He's 54 and been a pet all his life. Now living the life of Riley in my greenhouse with a run into garden ?

Bought a baby terrapin called Tango 17 years ago for my son. Still alive. Lives in a pond in summer and heated tank in winter. In winter it comes in the house every night and loves the underfloor heating. Comes when called and I tickle him under the chin.
Wife hates him and keeps looking for a home for him. No chance!

How fast was he running if you couldn’t catch him?
You might be surprised how fast they can shift.
The back garden was 6ft walled nice & safe but, Toby took some catching when he was in the running frame of mind & it was a time to beware, when he went nuts running we always got a thunder storm, even if you couldn't hear or see anything, we would get a storm.

I was running 10miles a day & speed skating then, so was supper fit & I was the only one quick enough to catch him!!!

Tortoise & the hare indeed lol.

The image I got in my mind with your last paragraph. :)

Found a similar sized tortoise in our garden when i was a kid. Kept and fed for two weeks before neighbour from 12 doors away came knocking and asked if they could look round the garden for their pet tortoise!

Working at a house last year and started talking to the neighbour who was sat feeding his tortoise in the garden and he told me he got it for his 6th birthday when he was a lad and he was now 82years old he also said it wasn’t a baby when he got it.
