A short trip to Scotumberland.

Yes I know there's no such place, it's Cumberland/Northumberland and Scotland for this trip.
Extra prep this time.....lots of watering of garden plants and putting screening up in greenhouse.
The tomatoes are coming on well and with this mini heatwave coming they need shading, luckily they are in self watering pots. A lawn cut will be needed, hate to come home to long grass.
Anyway, off at 10am, roadworks (short way of saying cones out no working in sight) going past the rust bucket Angel of the North caused a slight delay. Cross country road A69 from Newcastle to Carlisle although busy is a good road through nice countryside, last few miles on the A689 was a switchback ride but no bother.
Arrived at 12..10.

It's got all the amenities, shower and toilet of a good standard, owners are really friendly and can't grumble at £13 a night for hardstanding no EHU.
WiFi and phone signal excellent.
Chilling out rest of day enjoying the 🌞.
But it clouded over by 3pm😢

In the vid, my van is the one with the Zoro stripe.
 
We did a trip to Scotumbereland last year, though we didn’t know it was called that at the time. Great name and a very enjoyable trip.

We were on that same pitch about 3 years ago! and also did roughly the same walk! ( Mind you dont get photographed by Stewart J :whistle2:)
We've also overnighted at The Nook, a couple of miles away.

If you have refillable LPG, the Shell station at Low Row has an affordable pump.

Just beside / under Langley Viaduct is the house my ancestors built.
 
We're at a great pitch, 20 mins easy walk from Keswick and it's FREE. It's a blind road in a beautiful spot with overnight parking and currently about 10+ vans here tonight. It's on search for sites. If you keep going on your current route and turn left at Carlisle for Keswick it's one not to miss.

Saw a big old black "wedding" car go past earlier.
Told my wife, she said was it not a funeral car.
No says I.
Either way says she, your doomed.
Had to laugh.

Back from walk, down to Featherstone Castle then along to Lambley Viaduct then through Lambley village and back to site. Mostly on public footpaths some of it a little challenging and some uphill sections. Took 3 hours, steeping feet in water and having a couple beers.

Nice to know but we are turning right at Carlisle.
 
Did you notice how low the river is? Long time since we've seen it this low.

Puddleduck, sorry we couldn't explore around the viaduct otherwise I would have taken a pic of the house.
We were well knackered by the time we got there.
It was all we could do to climb the steps up to the footpath leading to Lambley village.
Would it have been one of the first ones you pass on the public footpath leading into the village.
If it is, we must have walked past it without realising.
 
Not to worry. I am going to see if street view has a good shot of it. I really want to see if the date stone is still there and what the initials are along with the date!! One set of initials should be JC ( for John Charlton) and the other set M for Mary. John's wife was illegitimate and she used both her mother's and her father's surnames.

My lot would have been south of the viaduct, actually a bit further south than I remember. There is an older building, at one time a holiday let and then a farm. I don't know if it was the older building or the farm that belonged to my lot, possibly both. The farm is the end of the track now but in the past the road went over the South Tyne, probably over a ford, and on up the other side.

From what I remember from the records one of John and Mary's two sons farmed north of Lambley on land that used to belong to the old priory or nunnery. I think he died young. When I feel up to it I must revisit my research and get it written up.

Did you get to the church? My ancestors are buried in the churchyard and there is also a memorial inside to one of the more illustrious members of the family who was a meteorologist. His son was the City and County Architect for Carlisle and Cumbria as it was then. The architect only had a single child, a daughter, who didn't marry or have children and died in about 1970. I never knew her. They were the rich part of the family, we were the poor relations but our branch is still very much extant.

Up at 8 this morning, waffles for breakfast.
I remembered to get them out of the freezer this time.
Heading off to Culzean castle, part of the "Scot" but of the trip.
Stopping at Dumfries on the way, as usual it's me that forgot to pack a couple of things!!!
Supermarket visit.
After that it's the A76 over to the west coast.
Would defo recommend Greenriggs cs.
 
If you continue on A75 towards Castle Douglas, we find the A713 a more scenic route and usually less busy than A76. Also on the A76 there are loads of roadworks in New Cumnock ie several sets of traffic lights . You can avoid some of these if you take a left in New Cumnock onto B741 signposted Dalmellington, then take first right (no sign) This will bring you back onto A76 at Cumnock.

Great minds think alike.
Sitting in Aldi car park at north end of Dumfries, was looking at Google maps and decided to take A712 then 713.
Lovely route although it's a switchback/up/down, my wife got more out of it than the driver.
Leaving here in 2 days, we are heading down the coastal road to Mossyard, gatehouse of fleet.

Went past a couple of lochs on the route and a hydroelectric plant.
 
Arrived at 1.45pm having started out at 10.30am.
Nearly 3 hours to do 60 miles !
This includes supermarket visit.
Just shows what the scenic route does.
Had lunch, home made sausage rolls🫔, nice stiff brandy🫗; then some💤.
Later on went for a walk heading for the beach, took the fork in the path that the camp warden told us but it seemed to be heading in wrong direction.
Checked Google maps on my phone but my mapenteering let me down cos I agreed with myself that we were going in wrong direction!!!!
Went back to the van.
Had a better look with my reading glasses that I'd forgotten, should have trusted Google maps!!!!
It's a lesson I keep learning, don't forget your glasses!!!!!
Anyway, relaxing for the rest of the day, pic of the walk through the woods below; haven't taken any others yet.
