Yesterday I felt a little bit of satisfaction from having filled-in my Tax Return 2020.

Mine is not complex as I only have to use the Short Tax Return, which in my case means adding up the rent and expenses, from on-line invoices, and my pensions, from P60s. Then filling-in the form. The longest bit is accessing the basic data.

I send it in by post and let HMRC do the calculation, which I check of course.

I am not sure where the satisfaction comes from, but is there.

Does anyone else get the same feeling?

My greatest satisfaction was felt quite some years ago when I submitted my final Self Assessment Return!

Likewise, when my last tenant moved out, and we moved back on the site to build, Then I got into VAT, and what I could and could not Claim as a Self Builder!! :( :giggle:

I do my tax return online, in April, as normally they owe me money and I want it back😟

I've part did ours on-line in May but am waiting for a single bank interest statement which, until I get it, means I can't finalise and submit them. Despite ringing the bank twice it's still not flipping arrived! Gonna have to ring again tomorrow.

I've done them ever since we bought out rental bungalow which I could do in my sleep, then when we bought the holiday lodges I had to learn all about how to submit the info on them which is completely different and also the best 'split' of their income to ensure we didn't pay tax - residential rental property if owned by a couple is split 50/50 unless the deed specifically says it is owned in unequal shares but a holiday let can be split in whatever proportion you want both for income and expenses. I was hoping that when we sold the rental bungalow it would be one less thing to do but of course it didn't sell so still have to do it.

It has also got even more complicated now that I'm getting my work pension ... oh for the simple life!

I had about 10 years of sending my returns in late. I was a grunt employee on PAYE all the time so each year I happily sent a cheque for the fine, back then it was 100 quid or up to the amount of outstanding tax. I usually had to write a cheque for 1p although one year it was 3p

I get the same satisfaction when driving away from a visit to my local Tip.
Odd, innit.

Give it all away.
I did, and now my ex-wives have the problem. ;)

I hate filling in my husbands tax return. They won't let us use a short return , I was told they don't use them anymore. His only income is basic state pension and half the rental income of a house. He never gets near having to pay tax, so why does he/me have to trawl through pages and pages.

I cannot understand that as HMRC sent the short version to me.

I do recall from some way back that to be eligible to submit a short version one had to meet certain requirements about not being in arrears, or been investigated etc. but cannot give a reference.

If you do it on line you can 'tailor' it to the bits you need so don't have to wade through loads of pages that aren't relevant.

The last couple of years I've gone through the online questionnaire "do I need to fill in a tax return" always tells me I don't.

Thank you, I’ll have another go at them. Michael has never been on PAYE as he was always self employed which means they don’t send him annual tax codes so maybe that’s why.

If he was self-employed recently that may be the reason.

Some people stop earning as self-employed then another 'job' comes up which is to hard to refuse.

He stopped working 12 years ago. Never had a problem with the taxman due to the fact that for the last 47 years I have sorted his tax affairs. As you say it’s probably because he was self employed.

I was self employed like I said not had to fill one in the last few years.
