Imagine you are a newbie looking for your first van. ...Would you be looking for looks, Vs how it runs, Diesel v petrol , and MOT length history and mileage.

Whats your thoughts on this? Please have a look at what's around before replying.

I would recommend something exactly like this, great engine, great base, great era of conversion, trouble is it’s over budget :(

That would be a great start for two buyers on a limited budget who’d be prepared to chip in 5,5k each and share the van

No shower? They'd be rather smelly abroad without one.

I shared 2 minibuses. 1959 Bedford ca then an Austin j2 ex ambulance. You have to be good friends and share the breakdowns.....and costs.
Usually we were both in the vans together, mostly camping and transporting venture scouts. Circa 1970. Both vans old enough not to worry about the odd scratch.,

My son and his partner paid £4K for an ex florists Iveco Hi-line
They fitted it out as a MH and after 13 months have got as far as Serbia
Their destination is Nepal
I am getting better at dealing with technical faults via WhatsApp…..

I thought the fsh was good but my friends sadly don't like the look of it, seems they want a C2004 full of corrosion. Aah well i've done my best.

Sadly not a good time to buy, a lot of rubbish and questionable conversions out there.
Personally would not buy a VW, yes know they can be great but starting out would not want to pay a 2-3 grand premium to get a VW. If it were only for me would buy a decent psnel van or crewbus and chucka mattress in the back till I got it as I like it.
That is coming from owning an 04 doblo motor caravan bought just at the right time. one now would cost me bout £2000 more than I paid a couple of years ago.
Do feel for those trying to get started. first van was a bedford which cost me £600, looked like, and possibly was, a panel van with the back cut off and a garden shed attached it did me proud for a couple of years.
Was looking at automatics the other night, but I really don't want a bongo or equivalent and don't really need one, just keep stalling when i change from the laika.
Son bought an ex ambulance iveco when a student, recouped cost by selling the tail lift, but not so easy now and rightly so some of the old stuff were death traps. am concerned that some of the stuff available now may be similar.
have looked at 'Betsy' looks a good buy pity it is ouwith the price range

Sometimes the better buy is to get a basic panel van no frills or alterations
Then fit it out to suit travel plans
My son and GF were numpties, they learned as they went along (Dad, how do you cut wood) but they are now experts, based on lack of money and sheer necessity
Their suspension collapsed on the side of the road in Serbia, they just sorted it and carried on
They have my respect and admiration

4K for a MH no wonder I can’t sell mine for £27k😩😩😩

PS It’s in the classified 🤞

Motorhomes and vans are commanding high prices.

Minibuses however are cheap as no one can travel together ATM.

You could find a new shape transit for £8k.

3k would get you a nice big Iveco, Lt46 or sprinter.

Cheers James
