just looking
From a very new member; Went to look at a 95 Fiat Ducato Swift Kon Tiki today £12000, 151000 miles, many new mechanical parts, few advisories from last MOT of slightly corroded rear brake pipes, owner stated they were not a problem, which i am able to fix. Inside was in excellent condition. New batteries, inverter, smart TV, heater and new carpets and sound system. Not knowing too much about motorhomes as this would be our first, any thoughts?

Get a damp meter and prod everything. Not known in the trade as a Konleakie for nothing.

what model is the kon tiki. There are a few models . 11 I think.

Yes have a very good look to the underside. Then the roof.

get them to show you how everything works check everything.
make sure it works and not be told the last time we used it was working .
been there done that.

go through any records they have with the van.
when was it last serviced.
how long have the advisors been on the mot .
were they wiped off each year or just keep coming up.

listen to the engine. See when the timing belt was last changed.
check all the engine fluids.
Colour of the brake fluid should Be green.

look about in all the corners use your nose for smelling real damp small sand mould.

try driving it and listen for unusual noises like creaking when pulling away and stopping.
Just a few to start with.

make a second trip to see it and by then your have more questions
go home think about the answers and any works that need doing .
only then make your decision .

Yes. You could do all that, or alternatively you could buy a better made van

There’s nothing wrong with the Fiat Ducato Swift range of Moho.

there will always be a bad one but far many more are value for money.
they dont have to be new to get the same experience as someone that spends over a 100 k for a Moho.

some need a little more care than others. ours Is old as well. But we spent some on it and it’s as good as anybody else’s.
and if it gets a few scratches or the odd dink I won’t be losing and sleep and crying about it.

once found get it used.

Some times people see a type of Moho that suits there needs.
and sometimes they don’t . Older vans usually have all the problems sorted out a long time ago.

Then there are budget and requirements like they may need a drop down bed For example
or some other features attracts them to what they have looked At. Size shape colour.

sometimes it’s the first introduction into owning a Moho and the first one they have seen.

as for better made vans. Even some new ones turn out to be total rubbish evidence of that here on the forum.

each to their own.

Ah no, tucked up at home in Cardiff. There's quite a few older kontikis still around 👍

I was just nibbling! Not meant to cause offence.

The Kon tikis sadly have a poor reputation for build quality. You do get a lot of van for the money though. If you can find good one where the rot has not set in then maybe it's an option for some.

Personally I wouldn't touch a motorhome or caravan made by swift during that era. It's a personal choice if course.
