Help!! I am struggling to find anyone who will cover the House for more than 60 days away. Up to 60 no issues but if knowingly going away for over 60 days then not only are you not covered after the 60 days but for the whole period from day 1. The major part of the insurance that is an issue is not being covered for water escape. Keeping the heating on at 15 Degrees is not enough. Should the boiler fail and the system freeze and flood there would be no cover. I would always shut off the mains water but draining down the whole system and leaving no heating at all on in the house ........... ? Previously not had this issue (unless I was just unaware) but as I plan to be away Jan to April (87 days) I now have a concern.

How to Funsters cover their home when away for long stays abroad?

Have you tried NFU? They have provided good cover form holiday homes not visited for something like 90 days at a time.

We paid an additional premium of about 10% in late November this year to Aviva to extend cover from 60 days to 90 days unoccupied;but there were restrictions on cover, such as heating to be left on [Frost Stat settings], no cover for accidental water escape, inspection visit each week, and if inspection by a non family member, no cover against theft UNLESS there were signs of forced entry.

Sounds like a perfect case of house sitters, especially if you can get a motorhome parked up and plugged in beside the house.

Co-op allow the clock to be reset if a family member, or friend, stays overnight.

M&S insurance up to 90 days cover with no restrictions, ie no need to have people pop in or to leave the heating on which did surprise me (have left it on anyway to keep the house aired).
Was with LV who also cover over 60 days but with restrictions.

Thanks for the responses. Yes I am with LV but I have reread the document sent and the wording states " leaving the property unoccupied for more than 60 days" Can I reasonably interpret this as it is OK if someone occupies the house say once a month with time between being less than 60 days?

"Home protect" used to cover us for 90 days. But our son who lives across the road moves in and out as required now.

Give them a ring. Last year it cost an extra £14.50 to extend our unoccupied cover from 60 days to the end of the policy (5 months). Although you do have to either drain down the system or leave the heating on, and someone needs to visit once a week.

Try Halifax, we have 60 days but I could increase this to 90 days for about £22 if I wanted to.

Just tried to get a quote with LV - been advised that unless you have other insurance with them, they will not insure a property that has oil fired central heating (n)

Yes I think so. The issue they have is that a leak left undiscovered for months will totally wreck the house. So if you get an inspection and document it you should be compliant.

We have delayed our departure for Spain so 60 will now be OK. Did not have the oil central heating issue as we have MH insured with them at a very reasonable price. They also allow us to start recovery insurance when we want at a full pro rata basis........
