We’re looking for a reasonably large A class motorhome in the 4000 kg to 5000 kg range. I’ve seen one or two which have this 3 Litre engine (it’s the 2015 version which I think technically is 177hp). I can’t find very much information about it. I have seen one or two comments on forms et cetera which suggest it might not be very reliable and that the gearbox might be a bit “dimwitted“. I’ll be really grateful for any feedback or experience that anyone has on what it’s like to drive and use, how economical it is and how durable it is.

Thanks a lot.

Question

Im with Steve and Denise here on this one. We have the 3.0 fiat in our A class and it is connected to the auto box which i will say is absolutely a dream of a combo! The engine pulls like a train and you return 30 mpgs in Auto mode!
Having had the 2.3 tuned to 160 BHP , whilst it was a huge improvement (Quantum tuning stoke)
it still lacked some grunt over certain cornish roads!
Plus...No timing belt only a chain! That has to be worth something!
The JTD is the Peugeot version I believe and is up there regarding the better engine to have.

One thing to consider with a Peugeot commercial is how many Peugeot dealers can accept commercials, not many that would be a big consideration when buying.

Our current one is auto/comfomatic works well and have covered 9k miles no probs.?

We have a 2015 Hymer A class bought new with the 3 litre engine and Comformatic gearbox. No problems to date and over 32,000 miles now on the clock.

It has got plenty of grunt for the hills and we average 24.1mpg, and that is driving it pretty quickly and close to its 4500kg maximum weight.

Thanks for your helpful comments and experiences. It sounds like the 3 L engine would have been just fine but the vehicle we were looking at had to be discounted for other reasons (we needed one with a garage big enough to store bikes).

I recently bought a 6000kg MGW, 8m Pilote with the 3lt, 6sp auto box. No problems at all, starts on the button, good economy, nice and quiet and pulls like a bloody train. She plods along all day at 55-60MPH doing 2000RPM, I reckon I'm getting about 28MPG; can't say much more than that I am very pleased with it.

The only slight issue I have is that the auto box can be a bit agricultural. If you are used to driving a nice, smooth, modern auto then it will be quite noticeable at first; especially going down hill, but it is designed for vans and you soon get used to it, especially with the semi-auto box where you can select the gear you want for any given situation.

Careful here. Fiat and Iveco use the same engine but different gearboxes. The worst of which is the Agile semi-auto fitted to the Iveco.
