anyone have any tips on removing alternator. can only get at it from under van. can get to the bottom fixing but cant see the other top fix or connecting wires . you need fingers like Fagan to get a touch on it. just wondering if it has to be removed blind.

Like most things on an A class... Work by feel.
There's no need for such a small bonnet opening except appearance but the manufacturers couldn't give a monkeys about the poor sod having to do repairs.

Disconnect the battery first.

I have the same issue and want to remove my alternator (1992 Hymer 564 2.5td). I have come to the conclusion that the only way to remove it is by using either a pit or wide lifting ramp. I and two others have tried unsuccessfully.

Is there access to the alternator if you remove the offside wheel and any plastic shields as would be done for a cambelt change?
You can’t get to the alternator any other way but underneath and inside the wheel arch on a coachbuilt Ducato van of that era either so it’s not just an A Class problem.

No. I have tried two such companies. In the main they are not aware of the restrictions with the old Hymer. I suggest you go to a heavy commercial garage (not light vans). I now have a quote from one. It only takes about an hour to remove and replace the alternator.

I had a look at that but I think its seald. will have another look might be worth ripping it off

It has nothing to do with being an a class for a change. The alternator lives down the back of the engine under the exhaust manifold and above the steering rack. Access is pretty rough and the top fixing has to be done blind and by feel. Just remember to disconnect the battery first.
