Will the Fiat 140 bhp engine coupled to the 9 speed Automatic gearbox be able to pull/ drive comfortably on a 3500 kg gvw , also what's the fuel mpg, if some have had experience of this combination I would appreciate their input/advice .

Watching with interest as (based on comments made on various forums) I'm fully expecting the new van I've ordered to be down graded from 160 to a 140bhp and that's on a 3650 chassis

I had the 140bhp on my previous A-class although it was a 6 speed manual
I also had concerns thinking it would be underpowered but it was turned out to be adequate

We have a 140 with 9-speed auto. We run an AutoTrail pvc close to 3,500 kg. MPG is 31-33, I don’t have a heavy foot and motorways are usually about 65mph. Power, for us anyway, is fine. It’s not a racing car but moves well, including up hills as the auto box kicks down to keep the revs going. The only (minor) criticism is that it revs highly going down long hills.
Hope this helps!

Hi.
Had this on a Renault " Master Piece " PVC . According to a TIME SERVED fitter ( As opposed to Codge and Bodge me ) It is the gearbox doing its thing. One of the best brakes on a long downhill slope is changing down and letting the engine hold you back a bit, helps on the brakes.
No doubt a Proper spanner man will come up and let us both know.............
Tea Bag. ( Going up a bank.?.." KICK HER DOWN AT 1600 revs.!. 🚛 :ROFLMAO:. Bird Man RIP." )

Hi,

yes, the 9 speed box does like to engine brake quite strongly on steep hills. It's very noticeable because the auto usually keeps the revs in the 1500-2000 range, but on the downhill it will happily keep a lower gear and let the revs go well above 3000. Sounds dreadful, but the right thing to do really...

If you want to actually accelerate down the hill (for example pulling away from a stop and wanting to get back up to speed), you need to add a bit of right foot to persuade the auto to change up.

We have the 160bhp with the 9 auto and there is plenty of oomph when needed. Apparently though the latest models have a different 2.2 engine to the 2.3 used over the past few years.

cheers,

Robin

I have a printout of my order from Rapido on a Dreamer heavy Chassis PVC auto and it still shows the 160hp which I have paid the extra for. Due end Oct. I would be dissappointed if a 140hp

Hi , I have been onto Stellantis , ( Fiat) and they phoned me back today after a Fortnight , and confirmed that the 160 bhp is no longer available, I should contact your dealer, as I have done, who have not had curtersey to inform me, I'm fuming !!

I was at the dealers 2 days ago and they gave me the printout still showng 160hp and under construction at Rapido. I know 160hp's have been coming through, I suppose it depends on when you ordered and when delivery is I guess and when they stopped the 160hp. Still nothing would surprise me, even the dealers seem to be in the dark! If it does turn out to be the 14ohp I will get a refund and spend it on a power upgrade if I feel it needs it.

Just spoken to my Rapido dealer and he told be the 160 is not being offered as an option for future orders but being honoured for current. Mine is showing as end October after being delayed from last March but he is checking again now so fingers crossed.

I have a 140 9 speed auto, my 2021. Run on the 3.5k limit. No issues and 33mpg over 8k miles. Travelling on west side of NC500 just now, no issues with hills but I’m not trying to break speed limits.

Had a 150 with comfortmatic before, this is way better.

Thanks very much for the information much appreciated

One thing to remember is that with the 9-speed auto you can also select from 'Normal', 'Eco' and 'Power' modes. Switching to 'Power' mode gives a very definite increase in performance albeit at the expense of MPG. Also, it can be worth switching to 'Eco' mode on long motorway runs to gain about 5 to 10 MPG improvement.

As JustifieAncient use Eco most times. An excellent automatic. 28 mpg on 'Power', 31 mpg on Eco.

We have the 140 with 9 speed auto on our 2021 PVC, drives fine, pulls ok on hills.

Ditto my delivery date which hasn't changed when I checked a couple of days ago in person at Highbridge and they state I 100% have the 160hp on the heavy chassis as ordered and given me a printout off their system. When the cut off date for Fiat production of the 160hp was I have no idea and nor do they but Highbridge are still receiving 160hp 2.2 engines for Adria Burstner and Rapido for pre ordered stock. Not sure when the OP placed his order but it would appear his dealership have not been proactive in keeping him up to date with his order.

I placed order in February this year with Marquis for my sins!! Bought my Last motorhome from Highbridge, I was there 4.5 hours before I accepted vehicle then returned 4 consecutive days, Salesman told me I must hold the record for the longest handover, I cannot on here tell the expletives I used for fear of being banned.

Bought a Caravan from Highbridge pre covid as an integral part of a family relay boat cruise from Plymouth to Leith and back. Caravan and handover was perfect. Not ever used a Caravan before but everyone who used the Caravan loved it. Highbridge gave me a very good price for the Caravan on trade in so no complaints. Every question asked re the new van order has been responded to quickly and they have reassured me in relation to my current order. Boat handovers take days with sea trials, so time is not issue for me.
Marquis do appear to have let you down with information.

I only speak honestly how the preparation was done, perhaps being in the Motor trade I was expecting the same quality preparation I turned out and in the 70's it was hard to turn out a Renault faultless I can assure you !! I agree with your last sentence

Had 140 bhp 9-speed auto on a 7.4m C class since Feb. Plated at 3650kg. Covered 3000+ miles in UK. Find no problems with performance. Rarely need “Power“. Often cruise in “Eco” mode as this makes gear up changes sooner and it tends to hold 9th gear longer in “Eco”. Less AdBlue will be consumed with more economical driving too.

Just had a new update from my dealer my order for a Autosleeper Broadway Auto , which I ordered in February this year has now had date moved to July next year, and as the 160 bhp has been dropped a 180 bhp with price rise will be an extra cicu. £9000 !! because there's no price guarantee on a uprated or down rated engine , Stellantis who owns Fiat I understand from another source other than my dealer says as Triango has such a big share of what Fiat produce they Fiat /Stellantis get fined if they don't reach the supply targets , so it' easier to supply Lefthand drives to the rest of Europe .
I'm fuming

I would be prepared to pay the excess for the 180hp steep though it is, but I really don't see why you should pay the price increase as you contract pre dated it. You have not changed the specification Fiat/Stellantis have, so I don't get the uprated or down rated engine price guarantee being nullified, the rest of the conversion remains as per contact! Marquis asking you to stump up an extra 9k over contract would deal breaker for me I'm afraid. I would be fuming too!

Ditto this on our new 2.2l version

That doesn't sound right as the 180 is normally around £1500 - £2000 (depending on converter) for a 180 over a 160. Are they perhaps including the auto box as that is normally around 3.5 to 4 grand on top.
The 9k even sounds expensive for a 180 with auto over a 140 manual.

We have just ordered a Carthago standard fit for RHD is 180 with Auto. We have ordered LHD so could have had the 140 but I didn't want to take the risk so gone for the 180 with auto.

With the very costly 9 speed auto it'll have a bit less torque (380Nm) than Ford's 130ps on any gearbox (385Nm) so should be ok for a 3500kg van.

25-30mpg depending on speed... 60 - 70mph.

Don't entertain either of the new Fiat engines coupled to a manual gearbox, they're weak.
Fiat have stopped producing the 120ps & 160ps.

Fiat decided to reduce the power to gain Euro 6 Final rather than improve emission recirculation.

Personally I wouldn't spend my money on any motorhome pulled by the new Series 8 Fiat with a Multijet III 140ps engine and I certainly wouldn't be spending the best part of a further 4k on a gearbox in order to give it enough tug to pull said loaded motorhome.

Good job Lenny especially with you needing to up plate. The Fiat 180ps with a manual transmission has 380Nm or torque... that's less than Ford's 130ps. It needs the 9 speed auto to reach the 450Nm advertised.

The 140ps even with the 9 speed would struggle with a 4000kg+ A Class.

On here you can see why they've now cancelled the 120ps, offered as standard on many euro coachbuilds, as well as the 160ps.

The 4250 kg is 16kg lighter than the 3500kg chassis.
Now that's got you thinking.
If I had hair I'd be pulling it out now!!! :roflmto:

Alko compared to Fiat perhaps?
