can i just say as a farmers wife, we wouldn’t take any meat products across any borders. it’s there for a reason, foot and mouth and bse are hovering threats. we are arable but i know the livestock farmers feel threatened and worried by the recent decision by the government to recruit a quantity of extra vets in preparation for an outbreak break of ?.

Very well said. These are not trivial matters.

Still have to take bacon had it taken at Santander year after Brexit so take it out of fridge and hide it when we get there now just don't seem to be able to find decent bacon over there.

The current F&M restrictions are specifically on meat and dairy products coming from EU into the UK, not the other way. We've just been away for a long weekend, returned yesterday Calais-Dover, no stopping, no questions, no search, nothing.

We returned Le Harve/Portsmouth Monday and our MH was thoroughly checked by a French security person with a rather large dog. On entering UK a much less thorough check and nothing said about food.

Last year on arrival at Portsmouth we were asked if we had any pork products! But not this year must be just random.

I see it as a pointless restriction. The supermarkets here are stuffed full of EU meats, dairy an cheeses. These are similar products they are banning travellers from carrying.
The risks posed by bringing in a piece of commercially packaged roquefort orBeaufort bought at the cremerie versus a piece bought in the UK supermarket is negligible

It only takes one to bring F&M or BSE back in and it will spread like a wildfire. I struggle to understand why anyone thinks biosecurity rules do not apply to them. I fyou can't get British style foods abroad, why go? Sorry, but I am just surprised that folks think that their interpretation of the risk is better than the scientists that advise the governments responsible for containing these diseases. That said I inadvertently took a tray of eggs to Ireland about 50 year ago and they were on full view on the parcel shelf throughout. It was only chatting to someone in Westport having crossed the island that we were told they were banned products! :(

I can understand to a point people smuggling a bit more booze or ciggies than allowed, but foodstuffs?

Sorry if that upsets anyone.

My point is the shelves of our supermarkets are full of EU meats dairy and cheeses.
There is really a negligible risk of a bio security incident from a french supermarket petit fours or a ham and cheese baguette

For example - just look at the selection of EU cheeses avaiable at our local cheesemonger. Brie de Meaux, Mortbier, Comte, Parmesan etc
None of these a re prepackaged

I understand your fundamental point, but clearly the scientists are concerned. Restrictions like this are brought in for good reason and, I suspect, following a detailed risk analysis. Many people believe that we did not go far enough to keep Covid out. Now they are taking a less risk based approach, everyone thinks they know better and want to break those rules!

It's illogical and not without risk.
