back fibreglass corner of m/home smashed up

i have just tonight damaged the back corner of the bodywork on my 2001 auto-trail Cheyenne incl the rear light ,, how was this done? snow fell tonight in Glasgow my m/home is parked up in the driveway as my insurance states it must be,, ok i come home drive into the driveway very slowly in 4x4 mode slowly slowly into the driveway i go, it is steep the first part of the driveway and
mono-block brickwork so it was slippy no grip, my 4x4 stoped ok but then slid no stopping BANG damaged front headlamp on 4x4 that's an easy 10 min job to replace from ebay but GRRRRR damaged corner on m/home,
so guys what do i do i have one no claims protection on my fully comp insurance with a £250 axcess ?? MMmm should i keep the axcess and get it fixed ,any idea what the ball park figure would be ?? im sure this is a common damage with m/homes,, has anyone paid the bill on something like this,,
im assuming incl light replaced around £500 maybe £600 , its a difficult call for me because once you notify insurance thats it even if you dont get them to repair it they see it as a damage and note that in your file bad history,,
the other idea is there is a few minor paint and small dings iv wanted fixed so
if i went and got it done privately i may get the rest of the issues done at the same time.. strange thing is this week i was ordering a back nudge bar that is made for protecting the back of the m/home for cases like this .
anyway drive gritted bolt closed after horse has bolted,, nice start to the weekend....

This was ours, claimed on insurance £3,500 for repair. Complete new rear and side skirt required.

You may be lucky and be able to have the fibre glass repaired. That's a lot cheaper. We were possibly too quick to ring the insurance people (saga). If I was you I'd get a quote before deciding what to do.

It's a shame and I know how you feel, but thankfully you are ok :thumb:

get a quote for cash and you may get away with £300 - £400. if you were local i could put you in touch with a fibreglass specialist who works on boats etc, who would do it evenings or weekend. replacing the light cluster is easy as you say

if its even £500 i would not involve the insurance as even with protected NCD the price will rise next year. add the increase to your excess and you wont be far from the £500 mark. then if you're really unlucky and have another bump, it starts getting really expensive:thumb:

first day of ownership

On my first day of ownership I reversed by Autotrail FB into a pile of bricks and broke the rear corner plastic moulding

It was around £90 for the panel

It looks like u have more than one panel to repair

So may cost more than loss of ncd

appreciated im sure a repair will have to do as the panel involved is all one piece from top to roof so repair im sure will happen,, i have had a second and third look at it for the winter im going to just white vynal it up il order the light and fix next week , when the good weather comes in im good at sorting most things,
fiberglass should be ok to work with i have a workshop with every type of tools, il make it a project, im now saying to my self could have been worse ,
even compressors sanders

Take the MH to Alan at Swinton mh repairs in Queenslie and get a quote, that will give you an idea of costs.

Don't know your travel plans but had big hole in our plastic fixed in Agadir last week. £70 inc respray part white part metallic silver.
If you are in spain the extra cost for morocco would be €200 ferry and cost of green card!

The rear light unit looks like it could be made by Hella, check with your local car parts wholesaler, Partco etc, mine cost less than half than from the dealers

Either repair it yourself or have it done at an independent repairer. If you claim on your insurance, although your no claims bonus is protected your premium is not. Not only will your premium for the motorhome increase at renewal to reflect the claim but any other vehicles that you have insured, or any vehicle insurance, that you are a named driver on, (perhaps your wife's policy), will also be affected. Overall, a very expensive excercise.

For a minor repair such as that I would take the Big 1's advice and visit my local yacht marina and get the local glass repair man who do a fabulous job of colour matching.

I would also not use the insurance for such a small repair.

i repaired one very simular my self on our auto-trail Cheyenne on the opposite corner , took a weekend to do and could not tell when it had been sprayed , that was until the bike fell in to it 2 years later and scrapped all the paint:Sad:
i used fiber glass mat and resin , gell coat filler loads of water and 2000/3000 wet and dry paper , fiat 049 spray paint compound and a buffer

Your damage appears to be similar to mine. I am not suggesting you travel to Joner just showing what a competant repairer can acheive for less than £200. Its not worth claiming on your insurance.

this forum for a newbie like me is fantastic,
for over 20 years i have answered questions relating to world wide satellite systems like motorised dishes and new IPTV systems now i know how the other side feels when the help is there,

Avoid any insurance claim except for when it is a major incident. I had a foreign tourist smash into me (he was on wrong side of road, I was parked in a lay-by in passenger seat doing paperwork) Nearly 4 years later the claim has finally been settled but my insurance premium went up by 50%, my OH's up by 25% (I am named driver) even after shopping round and changing insurance company.

My car was written off and even though the insurance had 8 months left to run there was no refund of premium :Sad: - they said because of the outstanding claim. Small print in the policy.

all materials bought today

my new light cluster from ebay got delivered today,:thumb:
i bought the fibreglass repair kit incl some metal mesh for behind bumper for strenth and also to hold both parts together and some fibrglass plastic fibre filler.
gray plastic primer and over coat,,,, bing bang bosh job should be good.
will post progress in motion,,,,,

so here is my new light cluster fitted and what a great use of some white gaffer tape till the good weather comes in and i get the shorts on a later date to get stuck into the fibre glass and spay paint,,, any way looks great and it means once my bearings and back brakes are done i get back out on the road this weekend,,,,,

iv included a wee before and after foto,,,,:thumb:
