From 4 June this year you will be able to use a lifelong 'Pet Travel Document' (PTD) to enter Northern Ireland (NI) from Great Britain. The online service to apply for a PTD is now live.

The PTD does away with the current theoretical need for an AHC (or valid EU Pet Passport) to enter NI, although checks have been suspended since September 2021 anyway.

For those people who live in England, Scotland or Wales and want to visit only NI, the PTD will simplify the process considerably. Their dog (cat or ferret) will not need a rabies vaccination or worming treatment to do so. If they never travel outside the UK then a PTD is all they will ever need.

However, the PTD includes a declaration that you will not travel onward from NI into the Republic of Ireland (ROI) or any other EU country. If you plan to do so then the PTD is not for you, and you will still need either an AHC or an EU Pet Passport (PP).

There may be a few motorhomers who do not wish to travel beyond NI, but I suspect that the vast majority of us will want to venture on into the ROI. If you have entered NI using an AHC or PP, this is fine. However, if you have entered NI using a PTD, then the lack of a hard border with ROI makes the crossing impossible to police. Please note that I am not advocating doing this but, from a number of posts on here and on the dreaded Facebook, we know that people have crossed the border without an AHC or PP since checks have been suspended. Not 'fair play' but understandable given the cost of AHCs. Whether there will be random checks in the ROI to ascertain whether you are travelling with the correct document, I have no idea.

For those of us that travel to other countries and have obtained EU PPs, the only use that I can see for a PTD is that it will save you a worming treatment on the odd occasion that you want to visit just NI. If you don't have a PP and normally travel on AHCs instead, then it will obviously also save you the cost of one of those as well.

The UK government webpage makes it sound as though everyone travelling from GB to NI with a dog (cat or ferret) will need a PTD. But think about it - if you have a PP and will travel onwards into the ROI, what earthly use is a PTD declaring that you will not travel onwards into the ROI? However, the PTD is free so if you want one, go for it.

I noticed that if you are a resident of Northern Ireland then you don't need one to travel to and from the UK. I have an Irish pet passport for my dogs but thought I would apply for the PTD anyway. You have to have a Government Gateway and then set up a DEFRA account. I have a house in Ireland so am too and fro a fair bit. I have attached the declaration.

Yes, I saw that you didn't need a PTD if you lived in NI. How will they determine where you actually live? Will you have to show some form of ID like a driving licence? Or will they just go on the address that the microchip is registered to? As the PTD is free there's not a great advantage in not needing one anyway, but I imagine that is a political nicety.

Regardless of the fact Jamie has an EU Pet Passport, I applied on line anyway. It was easy, just need a few details such as microchip number and dogs date of birth. Approved a day or two later, downloaded and printed then put with his paperwork. I've no doubt it'll never see the light of day again but if anyone ever asks............

Today is the day that the Pet Travel Document scheme comes into effect. Who will be the first Funster to use it? Please let us know how it goes.

We've just done the journey today. Government officer asked to see our document and then asked us to scan our dogs chip. The couple in front of us knew nothing about it. Fortunately they issued them with a single use form. Very easy to do as they did this whilst we were in the queue to board

Interesting, is it possible to get an EU pet passport in NI? I thought the island of Ireland was considered as a whole

Does this mean that the checks for AHCs or Pet Passports (that were suspended since September 2021) have now been reintroduced for those travelling on into the Republic of Ireland?

I've no idea where they would check them going into the Republic. Many people take their dogs over the border daily for various things. There would be uproar if a pet passport was required.

No, not at the border with the Republic but at the GB/NI border, which is where the AHCs or Pet Passports would need to be checked.

That would have to be Cairnryan. I wonder if they ask if you are going onwards to the Republic? We will see. I may well ask when we cross over as I have a pp anyway.

Perhaps as the PTD declares that you will not be travelling on into the ROI, they assume that if you present a PTD then that will be the case.

Wonder if random checks on pet documents will be introduced in the ROI, or how else they are going to police the system? Seems rather woolly at the moment .........
