Has anybody any experience of fishing this river particularly in Ginestar?

I am visiting late May, BIL has land that backs onto river and was wondering what licences I would need and where I could get them.

Thanks

What do you intend to fish for? Carp, Catfish?

First question, do you access to a decent boat? You will need one if cat fishing and or to fish properly! Do you have the right gear? You need big reels with heavy braid and if catfishing you’ll need 12-20lb boat rods. 2.20m (200-250lb) are regularly caught in the Ebro and Ebro Delta.

If fishing for Carp, you either use the boat to find the fish or you can do some pre baiting to draw the fish to you.

If you attempt to bring the fish to you, Carp on rivers are predominantly shoal fish. You will need to soak and cook a LOT of maize, like 100-200kg to attract and hold the fish for a few days fishing.

Alternatively it’s boat work and asking the local fishing camp owners for a few pointers. Worth finding large tributaries and fishing a few hundred metres up these.

It’s hard graft and hit and miss, but big catches in terms of numbers of carp and size are possible.

Not sure on Spanish licences as there have been some recent changes… worth a google to establish the latest!

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Hi many thanks, think boat would be out of the question, would be fishing from the bank, hopefully for Carp.

The river at the back of his land looks to be fast moving, but guess you could anchor a boat, but going to stick to bank.

I was wondering as BIL owns land did he own fishing rights, but probably not.

Will enquire in village when I get there see if I can get anymore info, will let you know if I do.

Many thanks

You’ll struggle on a fast flowing section. Be prepared to use two 12oz leads to hold bottom… try and find some slack water, fish near margin for obvious reasons. Get two 25kg bags of maize and soak for 48hrs minimum, then a good 20-30 min boil…. Bait the slack margin you’ve found with at least 40kg (dry weight, so 80kg cooked) maize the night before.. keep the majority of the bait in the slack water but fire some out into the faster margin water to drift down stream. You’re trying to get the fish to you and hold them… you could be several miles from a shoal of carp and whilst what I’m saying may seem excessive, it’s needed!

Fish big hooks, size 2, with a stack of hair rigged maize, like 8-10 kernels on the hair. A big blob of putty on the hook length to pin the rig down is mandatory too! This is not finessed carp fishing!

Be prepared… depending on the flow and the current debris you can encounter lost of weed coming through at best and at worst, whole trees.

Have you some big pit reels with 50lb braid? You’ll need it! I suggest a leader of 80-150lb braid too!

Exciting stuff!

If you want to send me a Google pin and I can look at the bank on Google Earth and give you some pointers where I would probably look to fish, happy to have a look for you!

I think jumar might be able to throw light on fishing licences. There are lots of them freshwater, sea beach ,sea boat etc & they are regional to my knowledge:rolleyes:

Local Ajuntamiento...(Town Hall) Might be the place to go to get a licence...third party insurance is required also...depends on region...
I pay 8€ a year for insurance but the licence is free for over 65 in my region of Murcia..

Many thanks for the info, last time I visited I spoke to an English guy who lived nearby and he mentioned licence might be free for OAP, will need to check on fishing rights.

Or you could enjoy yourself at a pub for the afternoon.
It sounds a lot of faf and hassle for a bit of fishing.
