To Dieppe and beyond

The date for our first overseas motorhome adventure has finally arrived. Having got the Rufty in mid-2022 we have learned the ropes from scratch with a multitude of UK outings over about 90 nights, and now we’re ready to go further afield.

We travelled from North Wales to Newhaven today (crossing choice prompted by Lenny HB thank you) and after reading the many tips so wonderfully provided by this group, decided to park overnight in the ferry queue ready for the 07:00 hr departure tomorrow. We needn’t have worried as we were far from the only ones doing this.

We have just had a quality burger and chicken strips at The Hot Spot Burger and Grill, just beyond the flyover, on a recommendation on here. Good shout. And a non-Funster benefitted as he wandered up to us for a chat just as we were heading that way so we took him with. And so word spreads…

Our ‘plan’ is to head steadily to Spain then follow the coast around to Portugal then cross-country back to France and coastwise back up to Dieppe over six weeks. We have a few places marked to see but anything we don’t see this time we can see next time, same if we don’t get as far as Portugal.

Following a hot tip yesterday from scousebird, thanks Helen, we’ll be taking a look around Dieppe on arrival, so there’s the first day’s plan changed already.

Best way to do it, a rough Idea of where you might go and no definite plans.
Have a good trip.

On my travel threads I tend to put a basic description and some photos if people want more info on a place easy enough to look it up on the net

I find threads/blogs with loads of text I soon get bored and give up following them.

Knocked up at 5am by the port staff to move forward for processing, low stress, friendly staff here. By gum there’s a lot of motorhomes here!

Enjoy your trip. Crossed last Monday. Some pretty heavy rain, thunder and hail working its way up through the Dordogne at the mo potentially till Weds. Take care.

We did roughly the same trip for 6 weeks in September as our first andventure and it was great. 6 weeks of 30+ degrees. Agree with Lenny HB, have a few fixed destinations and wing the rest. Off to Italy on Thursday via The Romantic Road, Stelvio Pass (rental car), Venice and beyond for next adventure. Have a great trip Backlanes, am sure you will love every minute.

If you're not in a rush to get to Spain you might like to visit Puy du Fou and or the Il de Ré on your way South, both great places to visit.

Thanks for the recommendation! Can I just check, is this the Aire up on top of the hill beside the funicular railway down into town please?

No,the 'Aire ' is off the second round-a-bout as you're heading into town.Turn right (first exit ) and it's on the right just past the normal camp site .If i remember correctly it has 60 places .

There are so many interesting and historic places to visit across both France and Spain. Depends on the route you take but on this trip we visited Oradour just north of Limoges. A place where in June 1944 a German division massacred 650 French men, women and children. The village has been left as it was with cars and machinery still in situ. Easy enough to get to following the N147 south of Poitiers.

Current stop: Consuegra
Rather than heading directly South we are zigzagging a bit and have come here.
Only 2 hours from our last stop so arrived about 2 pm giving plenty of time to walk up the steep footpath to the windmills and castle and back down via the road.
The motorhome parking is large, unpaved with no obvious facilities other than a closed toilet block as reported on various blogs.
I believe that the castle and windmills are lit at night so expecting a great view before bed!

Beauvais is nice for a town to have a look at, amazing clock in the cathedral. But almost everywhere has something interesting! Have a great trip

Well, the crossing was uneventful, departed 15 minutes early to a moderate sea abeam with a stiff breeze which gave us a bit of a roll but the comfy reclining seats aboard meant that sleep won out for most of the passage.

It being Sunday we decided to press on and catch Dieppe on the return. Having told the MB satnav to avoid autoroutes she took it a bit to the extreme and routed us via some wonderfully sinuous back lanes, glorious Normany countryside and scenic towns and villages to our overnight spot in a glade in the fôret d’Eceuves just north of Alençon. A good first day and a peaceful first night.

Todays stop: Villanueva de los infantes
Birthplace (apparently) of Don Quixote. Lovely compact town with medieval centre.
The aire here has 10 well spaced pitches within a secure, gated compound with high fences and a gate code to allow you to come and go once parked. To enter you use a large touchscreen and choose what facilities you want (per 24 hours).
Just parking 6e
Electric plus 2.5e
One access to shower block/ toilets plus 2.5e
Disposal of black waste and fresh water intake plus 2.5e
Disposal of grey waste free
Strangely, no bins!
You can just pay for parking initially and add anything else as and when you need it, we decided that we just wanted electricity to charge everything up after 5 days without.
The walk from here to the centre is 1.25km straight down a single road within the town, an interesting 15 - 20 minutes slow amble or 4-5 minutes by bike.
