What TV?

Hi funsters.
This is our first year in our self build campervan.
Had good trips up to now all in UK.
For tv we have managed up to now with tp link router and chromebook. Where we had poor/no signal we watched offline stuff I had downloaded from Netflix or I player.
Also have a vision plus omni-directional aerial on the roof ready to use.
Understand that in many locations the signal will be poor quality but generally we arn't fussed by live tv or streaming, we are happy to watch offline.
But, We are thinking of a tv now because the chromebook is of course a small screen.
Thinking of a19".
What could you recommend?
Would want 12v and be able to stream to it from the chromebook when necessary.

I wouldn't bother with a 'Television' as such. All you need is a good monitor of appropriate size with HDMI connection and plug in your favourite streaming device.
Personally I would just use a Chromecast device.

We have had a Cello, Meos, 2 x Avtex and now have a Sharp. For durability and viewing angle/ glare the Avtex wins hands down but of course is a lot more expensive.

The sound is not great on any of them in my opinion so we use an external speaker but the Sharp we have now has slightly better sound and the others may have improved since we had them. We are really pleased with the Sharp for the money but the viewing angle is a bit narrower especially when it’s brighter. Ours is a 24” 12volt and we paid £199.95 last November.

I had an Avtex in my last motorhome - picture was good, sound ok but a bit fiddly to use especially setting the satellite channels after update/tuning (but seemed very expensive for a small TV). I’m also thinking of the Sharp as reviews seem pretty good and fair priced.

For the price it is good. The only other issue we have had apart from those mentioned above is shadowing that appear randomly (reports of it online as an issue with some TVs) which is easily solved by powering off and on again and they magically disappear.

Dave has just reminded me that if you spend time off hook up you may also need a 12v regulated power supply for about £20 for the sharp. When the batteries dropped to near 12v the TV would go off on its supplied lead. This solved the problem.

We installed a TV in the van when it was new, as a TV bracket had been installed at the factory, and I thought it was necessary to complete the look of the lounge. Five years later, we have watched the TV a handful of times, as we both have iPads and either stream via the mifi or watch downloads. If I was able to rewind the clock, I wouldn't have bothered buying the TV and put the money into a fixed antenna for the MiFi.

I also watch my iPad quite a lot when watching stuff on my own but when we want to watch the same thing together be it sport or something else we prefer a bigger screen. So many options to suit individuals needs these days.

We bought one these it doesn't have a dvd player and the sound can be a bit tinny. However if positioned with a wall or similar behind the sound is much better. Even better is it has an internal rechargeable battery that gives you 3 hours without being plugged in. Great for our occasionional use but a heavy TV user may want more.

A few years ago I bought an Avtex, primarily because it had both Terrestrial and Satellite tuners , and was touted on forums 'the best' money could buy for a moho ..

Just wish it had lived up to the hype... picture quality is nothing special, in fact I'd say it is poor .. and sound no better than a cheap TV..

When it dies I will buy a cheap smart TV .. also with a Sat Tuner..

Streaming is all very well when you have plenty of data AND a good mobile signal.. but we have been in many remote places where there is neither TV nor a decent mobile signal.. and that doesn't mean the top of a mountain.. East Anglia has lots of dead zones.. where we live there is only a poor signal..

that is when I whip out my small portable dish .. takes about ten minutes to set up.. also use it abroad

Have you considered a Firestick and a small projector. Some of the van dwellers on YouTube have them and they seem quite happy with a pull down or stick up screen to watch TV/movies on?
