I have a Burstner Elegance 2003 with 55k on a Fiat Ducato 2800 chassis. I've noticed when applying steering lock at a standstill or very low speed, there seems to be vibration through the steering wheel rim. Sometimes it feels like it affects engine revs (as if there's a load on engine and it's about to stall). Any ideas funsters? Steering pump not good perhaps?

First of all it’s not a good idea to turn the steering when stationary, it puts a lot of stress on the components.

It will be the power steering pump making the engine raise its reeves as it’s probably belt driven.

Vibration maybe a slightly worn part.

Have you checked the power steering fluid level?

If I recall, the stop at the end of the steering is a bolt with plastic cover. If that drops off, it strains the rack on full lock

Ok thanks, agree, I don't turn wheel when stationary if at all possible, i was concerned there was a fault - as opposed to wear and tear.

It happens as soon as wheel is turned at very low speed, so not full lock.

Checked it and it's just above minimum level, so within range. I don't think it would be the cause therefore, do you? I'll get some oil and top it up nonetheless.

could it be the bearings a vehicle of that age could be due for a change , the wheel wont drop off and its a straight forward fix not too expensive my regular garage did it in what appeared to be minutes (must have been longer)

I don't think so. My experience of well bearings wearing out in a car is of noise rather then any vibration. It's definitely (imo) connected to the power steering in some way.

I'm only making a suggestion based upon mine being the same model and similar aged base vehicle it started with vibration and progressed a two minute check will confirm or illiminate bearings

Maybe I should have put the ? After could it be? So my thoughts were clear

Sorry, all comments very welcome, but I'm guessing the vibration you mention was when moving? I can feel something's not quite right when turning steering wheel even at a standstill, so the road wheels aren't rotating. What mileage did your bearings start grumbling at?

No idea don't monitor it that closely if it don't sound or feel right get it done . Usually my diagnoses is not far off even if the terminology is my own

I ring fitter and say, so this is happening or .sounds like it could be.........suggestion

I take it in they confirm or reject then fix it

Usually I'm.not far off .it's the bit in the living area that I'm not good with

Normally it's leaking ........take it apart . Oh no can't put it back now 😢

I know that feeling 😁

If it vibrates on turning the steering without moving forward or back, then it must be down to the steering rack and pump. Have seen similar after a repair with air in the system till it was bled off

Yes I'm pretty sure it's that. Just checked my warranty and it covers all steering parts, luckily.

Just checked and working backwards would be about 45000 miles

You have me thinking now must dig out the receipt

If when you turn the steering stationary (preferably on grass as less resistance) at tickover and it is rough, do the same with about 1500 revs on and if it then smooth it points to a worn pump. If still rough it could be a partially seized suspension mount, joints or rack.

Revs definitely help as it was affecting idle speed, I think it's pump. Thanks

I wonder if a dodgy pump is why I had some problems with swaying (see an earlier thread) at higher speed. I've been putting it down to tyre pressures or loading, but maybe this problem wasn't helping either?

No, can't see a pump having any influence at straight line speed but a deformed tyre or worn suspension would.
