If a purchase of a Motorhome from a private buyer is agreed and paid for is it legal to collect the vehicle and drive home, I understand that honouring a contractual obligation is classed as essential business.
Is there a helpline to get clarification?

Unless it was your only form of transport and you were also going to collect some essential provisions or medication on route ??

Oh bugger, spoilsport ;) I was going to watch this thread with interest.

Non essential but lots of car sales places are offering contactless delivery.

More importantly how would you view and test/check it?

You probably wouldn’t have agreed and paid for it then.....presumably that part has already taken place.

the OP doesnt actually state they have bought and paid for it yet either ....

Well without the hypothetical ‘If‘ at the beginning of the statement the rest implies that It has happened....

Had a phone call from my dealers on Monday, to say that our new Van had just been delivered to them. ( looks like Auto-Trail are getting back to work). But the Workshop at the dealers are still on furlough, but looking like they will start trickling back to work next week.
So, in a few days time, will need to take a decision whether I go and collect it(160 mike round trip)
Ummm!

I had a call from my dealer to say mine had finally arrived after an eight month wait, on the day of the lockdown. They said they were closing and I couldn’t collect.

Remaining positive, it at least saves me tax, insurance and storage costs. I would probably been even more gutted and nervous to say the least, if I had collected the day before the lockdown only for it to be sat on my drive, not being able to take it to Vanbitz for the security fitting.

Every cloud and all that.

My situation is perhaps a little more complicated. I ordered a new van last September and it is now at the dealers in Germany, has been for the last 6 weeks in fact. Clearly I can't even think about collecting it at present and in fairness it could be months or even into next year before I can fly out and drive back to the UK. Pretty miserable state of affairs!

A guy was stopped by the police yesterday doing exactly the same thing.

NOT essential travel
Looks like this..

Yes I read that yet I spoke to my friend who delivers new mercs all over the UK the night before last & although he isn't working Mercedes are & are asking fro volunteer drivers to deliver the cars ? Instead of delivering car & making your way back using public transport they now arrange that Hertz have delivered a hire car to the delivery address that you use to return.By all accounts he said they have around a dozen drivers working daily delivering.
Then this morning Jac was talking to his wife who said that there son , a Range Rover dealer, had to deliver one to a customer in Exeter yesterday even though he is furloughed?

Can it come over on a truck, did you buy through UK dealer or abroad?

Oops sorry "dealer in Germany" the question still remain though will they deliver it by truck.

OK another question but related for us anyway, is there a limit on the miles you can travel to stock up a vulnerable adult/parent who is shielding, if we had a motorhome we could socially isolate on the drive and deliver the shopping to the door.

I had considered speaking to the dealer (Herrmann near Düsseldorf) about the possibility of having it delivered but as obviously it can't go on a standard car transporter with another dozen odd vehicles reckon it could be pretty hefty, not sure where I may find myself if there's any any damage or snagging required either?

That said, (and I know I can't use it at the moment) this is the first time I've been 'vanless' in nearly 20 years and I miss having something even if it's not going anywhere. I'll maybe email them over the next couple of weeks, see if they've got a reliable and not too expensive contact. Who knows they may even split the cost to get paid and the van gone.

Oh dear, I really feel for you. I hope you can get it here before the end of the year, so that things don't get even more complicated for you.
The suggestion of having it transported seems like a good one. (y)
Good Luck!

I think not as that is essential travel and no limit has been placed on that so far. (That I am aware of)

out of curiosity who’s your dealer as we’re in similar situation and although we’ve not bought an Autotrail they do sell them.

Nothing it the report about any action taken on the driver, so I’d say so long as social distancing is adhered to then ok, no difference to all these people shopping in B&Q etc ?
He was reported by the police for breaching rules on essential travel.
We have had quite a few instances of this happening in Wales and the police have roadblocks on the border of Carmarthenshire/Pembrokeshire they are being very strict on non essential travel.

For the UK its simple
Go and collect it
Social distance and wash hands wear gloves etc
Fill up with fuel fully
Take all your provisions so you are self sufficiant

Its not rocket science

We are delivering vehicles to customers

Iv got trade plates so if anyone wants us to collect and delivery fine

GB

You could employ a self employed driver to collect.

Obviously being SE and a driver he can’t work from home ??

The lockdown is fraying at the edges here. Traffic has picked up considerably in our area, I saw a tractor on the road yesterday!

tractors are classed as essential , the animals still need to be fed & fields need ploughing if you want food on the table in the coming months

I'm aware, I was making a joke about our empty roads. '\
