Hi, i need help with the mechanical / habitation inspection prior to buying a motorhome (when I find the one I want )? has anyone used this service? what was your experience, good or bad? and can anyone recommend any particular companies or individuals who do this?
Cheers

The RAC do a vehicle inspection service on the mechanical side. The maximum gross weight they cover is 3.5t.

Hi, on a legal point please, please be aware of this.

The only way you are covered for any redress if a fault was found later after your purchase is if you and only you paid for the hab check/service directly to the service provider.

Don't let the seller pay for the hab check because the only legal contract is between the person who paid for the service and the service provider.

We asked the seller to pay for the check (the report said the was no damp) and it has cost us a lot of money to put right as the fault was discovered after our purchase.

The Approved Workshop Scheme was of no use to us at all even though the service provider was a member. We went through them and other legal channels but all to no avail, so here's the benefit of our experience on a legal point regarding the hab check - pay for it yourself before purchase and if anything goes wrong you have the opportunity of some redress.

I hope this helps.
Regards
Dave

I found this national network recently ... anyone had experience with them? they appear to offer a very comprehensive inspection for a set price of £295.95. They list everything that is inspected, if anyone wants to take a look :)

Or this company - a joint venture with the caravan club i understand:

By the sound of it most dealers use this chap for inspections.

Hopefully you will find someone a bit better(y)

I've used AA Motorhome inspections for my last 3 vans and they have always found things that I didn't notice. The dealers have mostly been prepared to fix the majority of points raised - with the exception of one dealer that wouldn't do a recommended cam belt change.

In the past I have always agreed to purchase 'subject to AA check' and paid a fairly large deposit prior to the inspection to secure the vehicle. I am not completely happy with this approach and next time I am going to see if it is possible to secure a price and hold the inspection without paying such a large deposit.

I'm also interested in these. Has anyone tried them?

MACIC is currently £295 for Van conversions, £395 for Coachbuilts & 'A' Class.

Caravan Inspectors (aka MCEA) has a Gold level service. Silver and bronze don't check for damp. Caravan Club Member - £210 Non-member - £240

I would imagine that these reports are a bit like the structural surveyor used when you buy a house. They exclude almost everything to make it worthwhile. I.E. We do not lift floor coverings or floorboards and cannot be expected to find faults behind sealed panels etc etc.
