Hi folks,
Can anyone suggest a decent campsite for a 1-night stopover, within shouting distance of Portsmouth ?

Thinking of an 8:30am ferry from Portsmouth, and I'm not a "morning person"

Would probably be coming down the M3/A27 route, so along there would be ideal :)

Any suggestions ?

Thanks,
Declan

hi Declan

We are sailing from Portsmouth this year and also have an early crossing so we have booked in at a Truck Stop. See below.

Hi Declan,

Why not park up at the ferry terminal? Going by some earlier threads, it seems to be the done thing with no probs.

I too have an early start (8.30am - middle of the night!) in a couple of weeks so will be parking as close as possible to the boat!

If I see you there, I'll be up early anyway so will give you a shout about 8.25am :Rofl1:

We"re on the 8:30 boat also, (in July) thanks for the info:Smile: PaulH

Caravan Club Rooksbury Park is the nearest club site.

However if you feel like wildcamping and want to be nearer try on top of Portsdown Hill at the viewpoint.

You get a fine view of the city and harbour, and there is Mick's snack wagon there as well. Great monster burgers the size of a dinner plate. Also The Churchillian pub serves good food and right next to the parking area.

And if you do oversleep at least you'll have a grandstand view of your ferry casting off! :Rofl1:

We are going to the Isle Of White the first week in June, school hols.
We are staying at a C.C.C. site about 10 mile away from the Ferry.
Cant remember the name , neither can Ralph.
We are going down the day before the crossing with a few tugger pals in a convoy ( 12 infact)
As some of us , have the early crossing to the I.O.W .
It will only be a cheapy though , knowing Dean who booked it . Probably a farmers field as everyones used to rally prices
But it will save getting up at the crack of dawn and making the whole journey.
Hope the weathers as nice as its supposed to be this week when we are there

I've lived in Portsmouth all my life and have never heard of the truckstop before !!!
You live and learn, must pop up and have a look.

There is...... http://southsealeisurepark.com/index.php under new management I've heard.
Great location, on the beach, terrific if you've got a dog.

Hi
If you plan to stay at a CCC site make sure they will let you off the site early.

We booked at Chichester CCC last year, for the 0830 ferry (remember you need to be at the terminal 1 hour before your sailing time) only to be told they would not under any circumstances unlock the site gates before 0730.

Chitcheser to Ferry Terminal is about 25 minutes. We smiled politely got our deposit back and went next door to the large commercial site, whose name escapes me, but where we had a field all to our selves, and no gates.:Tongue1:

Regards
Olly

There was a suggestion that you could overnight at Port Solent which is about 10 - 15 minutes away from the ferry terminal. I am not sure if this is still the case.
