Hi all

got a couple of quiet weeks up ahead and wondered about a trip down to the tropics (Southern England)

Thought about stopping somewhere on the Thames, Marlow or Henley area and then going down to the Isle of White for a few days before working our way along the coast towards Devon and then back up to the frozen north.

I dont really know the south coast that well so any recommendations on the Isle of white and good spots between there and Devon appreciated. Things to see and do etc and also where to stay. Dont like campsites but love CL's and Wild camping.

Thanks but I just had a tip suggesting I speak to Red Funnel ferries who do a camping and ferry package. dont normally do campsite but they do a ferry and 5 nights on one of 4 (two this time of year) campsites. For a 7.5m x 3m MH worked out at £132. I asked what it would be for just the ferry and it was (apparently) £132!

Sounds ok to me. If we dont like the campsite presumably there will be wild spots to be had on the Isle of White?

Plymouth

if you want to explore Plymouth, book into the Riverside site (they advertise in back of MMM) and it's a 5 min walk to the park & ride, Sainsburys and a few good pub/restaurants.
Check out the National Aquarium, The Hoe and the Barbican esp The Dolphin pub and Capt Jaspers for a cup of tea and bacon buttie.oh:

Plymouth is about as far as we got coming from the cornwall direction a few years ago so it would make sense to do the south coast and turn back North at Plymouth. cheers

Hi You will find Henley-On-Thames very nice, (good site,)
Marlow, within 1/2 hour of Henley (also nice),
you will have plenty of choice,pubs,restaurants, good fish& chips
If you are driving down from the North, onto the m40, your best bet,
come off at High Wycombe, follow signs for m4,Marlow,Maidenhead,
Marlow is 15-20mins off m40,many good spots if you want to wild camp.
Reference the ilse-of -white, you should have a great time,
I believe island is only 38 miles long x 17 miles wide?
you should find plenty of good spots for wild camping.
you will find the weather down south a lot milder,than up north.

If you intend to have a go around Devon, you should ask Roger (Wildman) for a stopover. He's living in Ilfracombe and would be most probably happy to host you on his small holding!

Love to wild camp but may book some CL's unless we can find spots in advance. Is wildcamping tolerated on the IOW? Mind you im tempted to take the Red Funnel offer as its basically the same price for the ferry and 5 nights on a site as it is just booking the ferry only. If its crap we can just go off and wild I suppose. Im not having a go at people who like campsites but I do like the freedom of wilding. Also I suppose with the dark nights I dont want to spend half the day looking for spots in an area Im not familier with.

HI I forgot to mention if the deal is still running with Red funnel ferries , you will find the sites ok.
on your way back up north, a site we use several times a year,
