Hello All
Quick question-------Do any of you keep your spare wheel on the roof rack ? I know it would make the van a bit top heavy but at least I could get to it without taking a level 1 potholing course
the bloody things heavy enough dragging it out from under the van and lifting it onto the hub without having to lift it down from the roof and putting the flat back up there and down again to get it fixed.
keep a bit of plastic sheet in a locker to lay on....damn sight easier.
Many years ago I recall seeing a MH on a long distance tour in far off lands which had several spare tyres (not on actually wheels as I recall) so I suppose it could be done.
Raising and lowering even quite heavy things from the roof is not too difficult if you stand on the roof and use a rope. I used to carry all sorts of things on the roof of my old Kon-tiki (which has a very strong roof). Pity it's also famous for leaking though to be fair mine didn't.
Just a thought would it be possible if you haven't got a bike rack to constuct a spare wheel carrier on the back of your MH preferably fairly low down to help with the lifting on and off.
Did this once on a previous motorhome, I was lucky I did not need it. I found it murder to get off again when I changed vans, Vowed I would never do it again. and I never have.
All the guys above are right, no one in their right mind likes lifting a spare one handed, at the same time as climbing a ladder.
BUT there is an answer, after sorting a suitable place for it to fit, open the Heiki (if you have one), and it's surprisingly easy to pop it on to the roof using both hands
Slip a cover on it (all that sun), strap it nicely in place and 'Hey Presto' 26kg of ugly weight moved from beyond the back axle to much nearer the front.
