Not at all @DBK we will be trying everything. I was reading the latest suggestions in reverse order so hadn't got to yours yet. I have printed them all off to leave for hubby to study while I'm at work. I am sure we will find a way thanks to all the help we've had. By the way, the you guys are ace comment was aimed at all funsters
Thank you, I have rescued the dog from the well. :D

Since 2012 but longer in my dreams
If you lock at Mac 100 's photo you will see the u shaped clip pushes in from the rear around the bike rack into the box and fastened from the inside .
Put the bottom set on then undo the twisters on the top bar and remove the bolts.Simply position the top bar to suit the groove in the back of the box and drill to suit ,it really is that easy.

I was going to suggest what others have, namely removing the top bar and drilling holes further along so that it moves the bar downwards when re-attached ... it will work fine with the longer 'u' bolts but make sure you put the nuts inside the box to stop anyone removing it!

We had exactly the same problem as you. Same box and bike rack. Have you remembered to extend the base of the bike rack? Once we had worked out that it was a case of fixing it on. We had to drill new holes in the box and got some longer u bolts. But the box was steady.

Took some photos to show what we did. Also added some pipe insulator to that back top bar.
It's fixed using square brackets at the back. One at the top and two at the bottom. Then using longer u shaped brackets under neath. I don't think you get them in the kit so may have to buy them.

At the risk of adding further confusion here is a shot of the inside showing the reinforcing plate. Behind it is a vertical pipe around which a curved U bolt is fitted. The U bolts with a square shape are used for mounting the box directly onto the back wall of a MH I think.

Thankyou all so much, this forum is fab. Just got home from work and the box is on and is clamped top and bottom. Just a few more minor adjustments to do tomorrow apparently but hubby is smiling. Well not quite smiling as i told him it was going to be a heatwave today and it has poured down all day so he got drenched! He will forget about it this time next week when he is sitting on a beach
