Just as I expected (going by many of the posts above), our MH has not been listed as a Class B, nor even as a Class C. Oh no, we are in the upper echelons of Class D, "multi axled goods vehicle". Gordon Bl##dy Bennett.

What database are they going by, because it clearly isn't linked to the one at DVLA Swansea? Our MH is listed on the V5 as a Motorcaravan, ie, Class B. It is just as well we are not crossing any time soon (unfortunately) so that I have time to get it sorted out.

Cheers,

Jock.

Thanks Andy.

As I'm on a PAYG mobile phone, I'll have to wait until I get home to phone them.
That 0300 3000 120 is anywhere from 8p to 40p per minute on a mobile.

Not a lot of use when ringing from abroad or computer? Or both.
No email , that's handy.
I use Skype..
Ok it is not completely free but ( for instance ) to a 14 minute call to my agent in Florida the other day cost me 17p :D
providing you have even half decent WiFi Skype is pretty good nowadays.. Not like in the bad old days when you was lucky to catch every third word !!

What an absolute ba##s up.

Cheers,

Jock.

BTW, others have had greater success with this line of communication for sorting out problems, so that's the route I am now on. ha_info@highways.gsi.gov.uk

Just checked my online account for Dart Charge. Yes they now have correctly listed the motorhome as Class B but next to it the system shows that it will charge £2.60 per crossing. The car is also shown as class B but a cost of £1.67. Clearly all is not well and guess what you can't get through on the phone. Anybody using the crossing in the MH in the coming days just watch your account. I am also sure there is something under consumer law when over charging so maybe worth complaining to trading standards if you are over charged?

Just checked my account and I'm down the same as a car at £1.67. will load my account in the new year, will probably only use the crossing a few time a year but will treat it like a Oyster card, load it then forget about it until it needs topping up. (y)

Our m/h is also listed as "Class B - cars" but is shown as having a crossing charge of £2.63.

I have spoken to them and aparently the Highways Agency has now priced m/hs at the higher rate of £2.63.

Time for some official complaints I think!

So about a 30% increase on what we paid pre dart? is that legal

They were asking me to pay £2.50 (car rate) for a crossing. Think they would struggle to then say I have under paid. I would have accepted their offer if I had completed the transaction.

They have always charged us the same rate as a car whenever we have crossed. Why would they suddenly after many years pick on Motorhome many of which can be smaller than a car and caravan which are also charged as cars only. Let's see what transpires once the system settles down.

The important thing is to establish what they are going to charge you and if different to the published charges (The same as a car) check with them.

Right .... have just spoken to Highways Agency who say they DO NOT set the Dart charges and confirmed that motorhomes should be in the exempted class and charged at the same as cars £1.67 on the account £2.50 otherwise.
So it's back on to Dart Charge when I get a minute.

They clearly do not have enough data available to recognise number plates as belonging to a motorhome. What worries me is rather than fix their system they will simply apply the charges for HGVs etc.
