Converted caravanner!
We have booked Camping Parisi but at the time of booking couldn't get lakeside. We will definitely ask and pay more though.

What is the weather like, the forecast apps suggest a lot of rain?
It’s been very wet the past 2 evenings/nights with a lot of low cloud. Today has turned out to be okay, clouds cleared and warmed up. Being so near the mountains it’s a bit unpredictable. However most of the top half of Italy and parts of Southern France seem to be experiencing a fair amount of rain. Just be prepared for everything!

We are thinking Coquelles, stop Chalons en Champagne, Besancon, stop Yverdon les Bains, round Lucerne and through the Simplon Pass to Maggiore. Never done it before so who knows.

We don't normally book, but the sites on Maggiore are very busy so have booked. So have to do the route in three days but I think we will use the toll roads (again unusual for us).
We went over the Simplon Pass last Friday (12th May) and there were lots of roadworks with countless temporary traffic lights which made for a very slow journey, but it's advantage is that it puts you straight in to Baveno and camping Parisi, where we stayed for three nights. You may be better/easier taking the Gothard tunnel and the from Bellinzona going to Locarno on Lake Maggiore and on to Baveno.
We're now in Sorrento for a week and the weather forecast for most of Italy is for more torrential rain this weekend.
When are you booked in at Camping Paris?
As an aside, whilst there are lots of restaurants in Baveno and Stresa we had a really good dinner at pizzeria Golfo Di Napoli in Baveno (pizza one night and pasta and steak the second visit).

Thanks Cliff, we will look at this. We are a bit put off by the forecast tbh, we normally chase the sun. We leave the UK Wednesday morning after a night at the Canterbury aire. Camping Parisi is booked from next Friday. Plenty of time for things to improve, but this is why we don’t like to book 🤞

Unfortunately I cannot eat cheese, although I love it, but I can make do with a steak so my wife can have a pizza!

Thanks for this. We’re currently holding off until the weather settles! We need to go to Bologna and Modena and it sounds like they’re having a really tough time.

Mint blanc tunnel was €68 four weeks ago (one way)

Came back via the San Bernardino pass, but we opted for using the tunnel at the top rather than the smaller more spectacular road over the top.

It was a bit disappointing because we’d been looking forward to the pass road, but chose the tunnel only because the weather was so rubbish, we’d have been driving through foggy clouds the entire time. Managed to get out of Cescena before it flooded.

When you get near Basel the right lane at Swiss customs takes you to the officers who will sell you one from the comfort of your seat!
If you use the route less travelled, e.g. use minor roads from Mulhouse and enter Switzerland at Lucelle you will not get opportunity to buy a vignette until you get to a service station selling them near the motorway (Delemont in our case).
