Not entirly sure how it works Gerry  but I think they look on surfing as the unlimited bit and viewing video/you tube as downloads---I can look up pages from fun but when you view you tube links it eats into your data :Eeek:
I know when grandson comes with us he is always wanting to be on youtube and cannot understand (like me and you) why he is not allowed :winky: no idea how or why they determine what is a download but I have never reached the cut off point yet :thumb:
edit I assume they can tell the difference between surfing ie a small amount od data every few mins from a constant download lot

There are no "unlimited" download deals - most of those that say so have fair play rules where they can throttle your download after 2 or 3gb....

Other unlimited deals specifically exclude tethering - such as giffgaff - (though if he uses only on phone its unlimited)

The best deal is via 3 @ 15gb pm, though its an 18month contract, you can get an unlocked mifi unit on ebay for the same price as the locked one from 3.

If he needs roaming - better buy a sim on the country youre going to - lots of other posts on this throughout the forum.

have looked at this before and bought a T mobile 12 month data sim with 250 mb / month usage.

this is an example of what you can do with 250mb;

quote ( Based on our research, we estimated you’d be able to do all this on your smartphone, every day:

Browse 10 web pages
Read 50 BBC News pages
Read and reply to 20 emails
Watch a 1-minute video on YouTube
Upload a photo to Facebook

It’s important to note that this is just an indication of what your real daily usage could be, based on average activity on a high end Android device. And if you don’t read BBC News or watch videos, that’s fine - there are loads of other things you can do with the internet on your phone. We just didn’t have space to cover all of them.

Why we put this estimate together.

We’re often shown lists of how many emails, videos and photos you can view with your monthly data allowance. For example, you could read 2000 emails with 250MB a month. Or download 32 music tracks with 1GB.

But how useful is that? We know you’d never just read emails or just get music with your data allowance – so we wanted to suggest how a real person might use their 250MB data allowance in an average day. That way, it should be easier for you to judge whether 250MB is enough for you to do all the things you’d want to do with your phone. )Quote

May be helpful to some

Got this a week or so back from Brother Pete, (leftlegger) has it now and works well he says may be helpful

Mike
this is from one of our engineer’s .He’s tested it over here but it
should work in France Spain etc.
I will talk to him later and possibly get one.I,m not on BT.
What’s Joyce on? as you need to connect this box at home to
make it work.

Cheers for now, Pete

Subject: FON Free Wifi PASS IT ON

I was told about this by Ted B few years ago as he uses BT and I
thought you had to have BT account but not so.

was looking in to getting a FONERA WIFI sharing unit last year as I
discovered you don't need to be a BT customer to have one and get Free
Wifi all over the UK, Spain France German etc

Due to the crazy 500 mb limit of Unisys 3G I found myself in a
predicament of not having any 3G to do any work, it slows down slower
than GPRS. Until the next month’s DATA anniversary

No explanation from O2 but Jan I ran out after 3 week Feb. I ran out
after 2 weeks and March I run out of Data after 1 week.

Anyway due to all that palaver, the fact is , I decided to buy a FON
box £35 one off lifetime fee , well Unisys had a "can't do" attitude
regards its stupendously low 500mb limit Wifi limit .

so I thought I will have a can do attitude as always I buy one myself
.It will be handy when on hols in Spain abroad too as you can use VOIP
abroad to make free VOIP phone calls with a smart phone.

So If your with BT you already have a FON account and can get free
Wifi all over the UK. But if not with BT you can by a FON BOX
seperalty directly from FON and you get an account from FON

for £35 once off lifetime fee and plug it in to one of your LAN ports
of your router . That's it . simples ......happy days ...... :)

Then you get free Wifi from about 2 million BT and BT FON users over
the UK , another 5 million un Spain France etc.

I was a bit sceptical at 1st but extremely impressed. Just drive up to
most residential areas and within 10 houses you will pick up a SSID
called "BT Wife" or called "BT with FON" or FON_FREE_Internet

Look out for theses and sign in with your BT or FON account and you get
blistering high speed Wifi 5megs usually so you can watch films,
download massive manuals etc that just cannot be done via 3G

I also found 30% of the time you get one in an industrial estate too.
Not as convenient as 3G but way faster and works a treat

So far since Monday this week I have used it 3 times when I could
not get a stable 3G from the IPHONE.

If you do want to get one don't be fooled by their screwed up web page
from FON .when you click on which country it says UK is not supported
yet this is an error on their web page

As I say , if you're a BT customer you already have a FONERA/ BT
account and can already get Free Wifi via your BT account but you
don't have to be a BT customer to get an account /hardware

BT accounts get all the FON Wifi of which there are 2 million plus all
the BT open zone of which are far less prevalent .

Standard FON model costs £35 and advanced model £55 that you can earn
shared revenue from and also acts as a USB NAS BOX plus loads more
features
Link Removed
as I say don't be fooled by the
option when you click join and say you're in the UK it will report that
FON does not support the UK which is rubbish as FON has the largest
coverage of all countries ( 2 million users ) last year it was 1
million . It took me a while to find the purchase link.

This is the correct link to buy a FONERA in the UK

, I guess the cost is just electricity to power the Wifi router as you
need to have it one to be able to get free Wifi elsewhere . So I put it
on a time 9am to 5pm. To save electricity

No idea how it all works but on the 250 mb download card with unlimited browsing I have done last weekend 10 mins YouTube (grandson) then 3 days with 3 to 4 hours browsing on both fun and ebay, autotrader, and searching local area pubs etc,

Terry I don't know what the fon box is but I have access to fon as a BT customer and it means I can sign in to any fon wifi network for free, so far we have found these all over the uk not always near a campsite though used it a few times in France even had it at a campsite in Royan. We have also found loads of places through out Holland with it.

This is the bit of kit you need (without having to sign up with their UK partner, BT). It plugs into your existing broadband box (with a network cable) and once you're set up with it you can use any other FON wifi hotspot anywhere in the world.

Used to be difficult to find a hotspot but now they've reach enough people that you usually find a few in any town or housing estate.

Yep that`s correct as I understand it and also like any wifi if you have the code it will support more than one device ,pc,tablet, phone, all so long as they are wifi capable,I am no expert on the subject so do your research, before purchase if that's the way you are going
The "box"once activated to an account(password protected) attached to a "live" BB point must be switched on any time you wish to use it elsewhere in the world, therefore leave it on give it to a friend ,relative to switch on,go away find a wifi sign in and select you device type pc phone etc and away you go .hopefully someone on yer can confirm or correct this and if you give your code to fred or freda elsewhere and they find a connection ditto :winky:

Sorry, I've read all the blurb and understand most of it but, like Terry I'm a bit thick on this too.
Ok, if I'm away in the UK I've used a dongle in the laptop or tethered with an old phone that costs me a £1 a day on 02. Last time out I bought wifi on a CC site. So when BwB says "It plugs into your existing broadband box (with a network cable)" I'm not going to have a router with me in the van so does it plug into the network slot on the laptop? If not what replaces the router?

Hi Terry the info came from PC technician via Pete also a techno so here goes.
1, you have a broadband point to which the box that you Purchase is plugged into, and is then active.
2, I will assume that when purchased all relevant login addresses are given !

3 create an account ,email - password- select hardware you are using ,ie PC ,phone, Tablet, etc. (obviously must be capable of Wi-Fi )&login that's you done.
no sim card just BB connection.
4 When you are away the box stays at home or at a Landline BB connection somewhere, you on your Tablet sat down with you fish and frites, having already found a wifi BT or BT-fon hotspot in the UK (not sure what its called abroad) sign into you account and you should then be online.
Earlier I found a BT-with-Fon hotspot near to my location ,so signed into it using Bro`s PW online now on both PC & Fone :thumb:

Hope this helps ::bigsmile:

An expert? Moi????

I'm not an expert by any means, but as I understand FON, it's a bit of a deal for broadband users.

Think of your home broadband having a capacity of 100 bits per minute (or whatever the proper terms are!!). In normal domestic useage you are very unlikely to use anything like 100 bits per minute, more like 40 tops. When you plug in the FON box, via the cable mentioned, the box nicks say 20 bits per minute of your 100 and makes them available for outside users (other people who have bought FON boxes and plugged them in at their home addresses) who are within range of your wifi signal.

They log into their FON account and use YOUR broadband for their internet useage. There is some clever electronic trickery that keeps your remaining 80 bits per minute separate from the publicly available 20 bits so they can't access your system or files etc.

The deal is basically that you agree to let other people use your spare internet capacity on the understanding that when you are away from home, you'll be using other FON members' spare capacity.

I hope that gives an idea of how it's supposed to work.... as I said, I aint a proper expert. It sounds like a good idea to me.

I'm with Orange for my personal mobile and they tell me that I've got access to 'BT with FON' wifi points but I haven't had much success with connecting to them so far!

Nope.... the deal is that if you are an existing BT customer, BT have signed a deal with FON so you can generate an account and use the system without buying a FON box of tricks.

If you are with Sky, by buying the FON box and plugging into your router, you are paying to join the FON network (as BT has already done for their customers).

Very well explained, "the thing stays at home" explains it all, so like Terry I'm with Sky BB but didn't I read on the web site that you don't have to be a BT customer, so mystery solved, I think.

Edit: Beat me to it Simon. Thank you, and to everyone else.

Hi Simon, sorry to be thick, but if I understand right ---bere in mind I am with sky for BB and line rental :winky: I simply buy the £34 FON box and plug in via my sky router and that's it ?No more to pay provided I am within distance of sombodys BT landline that I can piggyback on ?

You're not being thick at all Terry.... when it was first explained to me I too thought it sounded too good to be true, what's the catch etc. but apparently there isn't a catch and it is a good deal.

Having said that, I haven't actually got one myself yet though when I first started looking there were lots of posts from funsters who do have it and vouched for it's worth. I was all for getting one, then my mobey contract came up for renewal and the customer service monkey told me that as an Orange customer I could access BT with FON wifi points so I didn't pursue it, and have managed without it on my travels so far.

(me, thought of as an expert.... HA! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: Only my old Dad has previously thought of me being a technowizard, and that's because he struggles to find the on/off button!)

:ROFLMAO: This has got me thinking (always dangerous) I was oringinaly posting the question for a mate but now thinking about getting one for me ::bigsmile:
Does the landline have to have unlimited BB or simply a BB landline ?I could go for the free BB with a 2gb monthly limit saving me £7.50 a month(via sky) then conect via the FON using a BT wifi nearby or is that just too simple ?
terry
edit My tablet finds 3 or 4 bt password protected BT landlines nearby which I could use the FON ?
