HI, we have a 2011 Autotrail Scout, 6 speed manual, only 22500 miles on it. Been advised that the syncro on 6th gear is on the way out.
Took it to local Fiat approved dealer, A.M. Philips in Dundee to have it checked and despite moving back and fort when driving in sixth they say nothing wrong with it !.
I have a B and G warranty on it and by all accounts supposed to be the best and they advise take to a garage , get an estimate re costs before getting the go ahead for repairs.
So question is who can recommend a garage that could (A) remove the gearbox and (B) repair it and then replace.
Any help advice would be much appreciated !

If you mean the gear lever moving back and forth when coming on and off the power, it seems to be a very common characteristic of the 3l. It does not indicate a fault.
Mine had it from new, and I did 45k without any further problems. You could have the synchro rings replaced but it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference.

The Augusta has the same movement in 6th, I think I read somewhere that 6th gear is external to main box and splash lubricated.. Or was that 5th in the 2.8JTD?? Anyway mine has done 110,000 miles like that no problems, so far.

to check for syncro problem, is drive in the said gear and come of throttle quickly if it comes out of gear syncro(maybe) at fault, it it holds its not syncro, (y)

Augusta, that lubrication issue was on the pre JTD 5 speed.

If the gear change is generally poor it could be the cables, they nylon joints tend to wear. Quite expensive to replace.

If you do get the box taken out, it is a fairly major job, it would be wise to take the opportunity to change the clutch if not already done. The book says its an 11 man hour job for gearbox out, clutch fit and refit. But that is on a van with good access, an A class will take longer. I queried such a long time quote, but there is a lot to dismantle, front wheel, suspension, drive shaft etc etc

Yes I remember my McLouis 2.8 JTD was potentially affected. However being a tow-er I rarely get into top gear.

tjay if its not crunching going into gear or jumping out of gear under load leave it alone
Check engine and gearbox mountings are ok

Change the gearbox oil and drag a magnet through the old oil. If there are metal filings in the oil, they will stick to the magnet and you have a problem

Bad idea
In the day some gearbox drain plugs had magnets fitted
Don't think I ever took one out that didn't have filings attached
Synchro hubs are made of brass and even duff ones won't end up in the bottom of the gearbox anyway
Not been into the gubings of a gear box for thirty years and no desire to
