I'm a newbie
Good Morning,

I am looking to install reversing Camera in my Eldiss 120. Speaking to other MH owners, I live on Hayling we get a lot, so don't be scared if you are there and someone you have never met before approaches you and tries to get all your experience. There seems to be a split in those who think WiFi is perfect and those who insist Hardwired is the best option. I guess that means a mixed response from Motor Home Fun but any advice would be welcomed.

Hardwired anything is much more reliable

Be it, cameras, alarm switches, WiFi or power related

Remember you need to get wires to the “wireless” camera anyway, so running an extra cable to the monitor isn’t such an issue

I've been thinking about this for my build as I ideally want CCTV inside and out.

I'm going to go with hard wired for reliability as I can plan my cabling before I buy/build. I'll have them hooked into my network too for remote access when I'm away.

If you can get easy access to run your wiring without too much hassle then I'd say it's the best option ?

All the more wires, all the more for the mice to chew through.

Is that something I need to be aware of as a newbie?! ?

I purchased a wireless system last year and 90 days later with all sorts of problems changed it for a wired system which was a lot easier to install than I first thought.
The 9 Metres of my van even with line of sight between sender and receiver it wasn't happy. Glad I changed.

Me thinks you have had a wee moose in the hoose problem in the past.
LOL surprisingly not despite my last house being on the edge of a field where I caught numerous mice in my house garage but never been that unfortunate to have mice eat through van wires. Have read plenty of threads on mice chewing the wires though!

You are quite right. We managed to collect one in Spain last year. Took me a while to catch the little sod but got away with any wires being touched.
He was far too busy concentrating on the imitation fruit on the Xmas decs in the floor.

If your worried about vermin, why would you think they would target a wire for a camera, over anything else?

Vermin are vermin, wires are wires!

For long term faultless, hassle free performance wire it

If you want a cheap quick lazy fix? chuck a wireless camera on.

Nothing wire less is better that it’s wired equivalent

Wired wherever possible. Wireless only if too inconvenient.

I have a twin lense camera , which is hard wired. I find it useless at night for visibility so I installed sensors which were hard wired. I bought a indoor monitor camera for watching the dog when left in the motorhome. Hard wired for power, but made a mistake and bough one without a motion sensor. Installed it in my front porch and have never had a problem, checking on the weather, over the mifi in the bus. If you already have mifi in the mh, does that make the Wi-fi connection more reliable for cameras/sensors?

I put a wireless one on my previous mh which was only 6.5M and it was ok most of the time, though occasionally suffered interference. Wired is better, especially on a longer vehicle.

I have a Garmin BC40 on my 7m Majestic 155. It works really well as a reversing camera, and is battery-powered and wireless, so just needed attaching to the number plate. Of course, it needs to be paired with a suitable a Garmin satnav........

Re: mice :X3: , our van is a 2003 hymer when checking saw historiCal tiny bite marks on engine wires,(MOT) chap sprayed it with copper spray, for 2 reasons- apparently would grate their teeth, also you can see more clearly if they are around there, either way can and will cause damage. Good luck(y) when building don't be snacking in the van,

Hard wire everything no brainer and if you have a Hymer (ours was)you'll probably find it is already wired so you just need to connect each end. Other top models may be pre wired too so worth checking.

I installed wireless camera last year. Works really well. Connected to number plate light, so I can have it on permanently if I want. No long wires to fiddle with.
Bought it from Amazon and would have returned it if it had not worked.

Had 2 vans with wireless both fitted by professionals both worked for a few weeks then only intermittently before packing up all together. Two of my friends had same problem. Waste of money.

I am fortunate in that my current MH came with a hard wired reversing camera with optional rear view mirror. On my first MH I fitted a wireless system two wires job done worked well, when I moved on I gave it a friend and two years later still working fine. Personal choice agree hard wired preferable but 10 mins to fit wireless

I think you can still buy vinyl records too.
Okay, I get the point........ so in a similar vein of thought - you want a solid state muic player (phone, ipod) or a record table and needle that will jump over every pot hole?..... :)

All I can comment on is my own experience. It may all go tits up in future, but so far, so good.

Hard wired. Leave a loop of extra cable at the ends if possible. Also, if running wires through “tunnels” put in an extra cable as a draw wire just in case you want to add to the mouse food ?

I fitted a wireless system to my 8m Clou Liner six years ago. Never had any problems whatsoever. Wired the camera to the reversing light so that it powered on when selecting reverse gear. It was a system for a commercial artic unit that I bought at the Lincoln show but cannot recall the name.
