How do insurance company's differ so much for the same risk

Not sure where you store your van, sounds suspiciously like the same place as me, but I had that problem with Comfort on last renewal, and a few years ago too. It seems that they took no notice of the Gold CaSSoa status and instead relied on the first half of the postcode - which is a very high risk classification. Once I got them to ignore that and look at the address properly they were the best quote by far. Sadly we've now parted company as this time they wouldn't budge - so much for loyalty.

But the answer to your question is there - all insurance companies look at the risk factor and all of them have different loadings for different aspects. Result a huge variety of quotes, it's been a source of irritation for me for years.

Best to go for a good specialist broker - AIB were helpful to me even though in the end they didn't get my business.

I think it's always been the same I remember when our son had quotes age 17 to insure our Corsa. I think the highest was over £20k

I'm 75 and have just renewed with Comfort, my m/h insurer for the past 7 years.
£365 (£339 last year). Fully comp. No breakdown cover.
No claims for 30+ years (but I don't think Comfort offer any NCB).
Rural Sussex.
Kept on my drive.
Valued at £17k.
Other than the VW base vehicle manufacturer's cab doors locks and one hab door lock there are no other security devices.

How do insurance company's differ so much for the same risk
Because the expensive one's often don't want your business, as for whatever reason you don't fit their profile.

I search all of the comparison sites every year for my car insurance. I never choose the absolute cheapest, as there's usually a reason why they're cheap, but every year quotes range from a little more than £100 to several thousand. In one case, I think £22K was the highest. The most expensive are black box insurers who concentrate on younger drivers, and I suspect as an old f@rt they have absolutely no interest in me, other than being willing to take the money if I was stupid enough to cough up :roflmto:
