I'm a newbie
Hi all, I'm looking at a new Globecar Campscout B 3.5t. it comes with a Fiat 2.3l mjet 120 Bhp engine as standard. I will be going for the new 9 speed automatic gearbox and won't be towing anything if that makes a difference. Upgrade options are 140 Bhp @£990, 160Bhp@£1990, 180Bhp@£3975. Which would you go for?. Also chassis upgrade 3.5t light to 3.5t Maxi cost £400, whats the benefit of the upgrade. Thank's.

The advantage of the 180 engine is it has a very wide torque band compared to the other engines. This means less gear changing but with a nine speed traditional auto box I wonder if that matters? The gear changes should be rapid and smooth even under load.

I've got the three litre 180 but with the Comfortmatic box which is a manual box with elves to change gear and operate the clutch. On hilly alpine passes it is best to put it in manual as it can do clumsy changes at times, particularly second to first under load. The wide torque band means I can leave it in the same gear for long periods.

The Maxi chassis is good, 16" wheels and the option to easily upgrade the GVW if you need to later.

If the price is not a problem go for the 180 as John says torque is better and you can never have too much power. Chassis upgrade worth it as if you are tight for payload you should be able to upgrade the maxi to 4250 or 4500kg.

Just ordered a new Burstner TL680g with the 140bhp engine and new auto box, 4250kg and a 7meter body, I’m pretty sure it’ll be near perfect match.

My Hymer is 4500, I run at 4200 it has the 150 with Comformatic. It's OK but if was ordering now I would have the 180 as I could do with more power in the mountains.

Having had 2 Globecars (a FamilyScout L and a Campscout) both of which were 6.36m long I'd certainly recommend you go for the Maxi chassis as it will give you 16" wheels, a bit more height/clearance, and disc brakes all round and better suspension on the rear as well as being able to uprate to 4500kg if you need it whereas the standard chassis can only go up to 3850kg without mods which would cost you a lot more than £400. Another reason for this is that PVCs are generally heavier than coachbuilts of the same length due to the steel body so if you go for the standard chassis you may have to watch your weight.

Both ours had the older 2.3L 150bhp engines (2015 & 2018 reg) so I'd go for the 140bhp engine as I'm sure that will be more than sufficient unless you've got an extra £1,000+ to burn!

Just one word of caution - have you checked out the fridge you're model has? Most (if not all) have the electric only one and having had one I don't think I'd get a PVC/MH with one again as we were never happy with it, it was power hungry and at times noisy. I believe there was an option to have a 3-way fridge so if you do have £1000+ to burn I'd spend it on that rather than an extra bit of bhp.
