Hi all, I went away to the Alsace in June on my own and totally loved it, I mean, medieval towns and cheap wine...what's not to love? but for next year I fancy more hiking and doing a bit of Julie Andrews in the high meadows...so my question is...where would you recommend? I'm open to any ideas, I've stayed in Lauterbrunnen and Garmisch on motorbike tours but didn't get a chance to hike there, but if anyone has ideas or suggestions, I'd love to hear them (y)

Mittenwald worth a look if you have not been before.
Lakes area below Munich is well worth a tramp about
Not as rugged as Lauterbrunnen but nice area
Not been to Saxony yet

Thanks, I'll add them to my Google (Search for Sites) list.

Switzerland is pretty expensive with very few options other than campsites and even a coffee is going to be pricey.

Bavaria is nice with lots of choices and even a few beaches if you dont mind lakes. Berchtesgarten at the very tip is also nice scenery and worth going up to the Eagles Nest, Hitlers villa.

Saxony & Bavaria both nice, Bravaira is great for mountain walking and lots of Hitler history.
Switzerland only if you have a bottomless wallet.

Thanks!

The Stellplatz in Garmisch Partenkirchen is a good base. Next door to the Wankbahn chair lift. Loads of hiking and biking opportunities on the plateau. Stellplatz ticket includes local transport.

Switzerland is never going to be cheep but it's manageable
The main difference is campsites are the normal.
I have found some bits of France just as costly
If you end up there look at the various travel passes you can get. There are ones that let on trains, ferry's, buses and some cable cars that make getting around easy.

Good call, thanks!

If you're going to Southern Bavaria, try nipping over the border to Austria, the upper Tyrol is stunning in the summer, just keep off their motorways

It is but they're an awkward lot. Grossglockner is doable non motorway but has a toll of its own

grossglockner is a tourist attraction in itself, it has a toll €38 or €48 depending on under or over 3500kgs. but you can get to it without needing the awful go box. There are a few routes to transit Austria but tbh Bavaria is just as nice and a whole load easier.

You can also get a pass to go up cable cars in some areas in the Tyrol if you stay at campsites. We did at Zell am See.
