Hi All

Just booked the ferry to Roscoff in middle of September with a return from Santander 18 days later. We want to visit Bordeaux and wondered if anyone had any recommendations for campsites with easy public transport links to the city. Apart from Bordeaux we are not booking anywhere but trying to stick to the coast and take one day at a time, however any tips on places to visit would be welcome.

Many thanks Philip

44.92638, -0.63156 are the Co ordinates for an fp site but they don't worry as they freely accept others. You park in the vineyard of the chateau free of charge. Only 5 spaces and they don't open on Sundays.
Being British we feel obliged to buy something at their shop and we bought the wine. It was 15 euros a bottle. We drank that merlot which is a 60 quid bottle in the UK. We drank it in the vineyard watching a setting sun. The wine was worth every centime.
It ia about 1km from a tram terminal into the beautiful bordeaux. Ensure you walk up the north bank of the river.

Don't forget the Twin Lakes "meet" is on at that time. Although (I'm told) it is quite possible to reach Bordeaux from there I would think you probably want to be closer. However a couple of days at Twin Lakes might be nice.
See you there?

A number of us took the train from the twin lakes meet into Bordeaux last year. Graham (that fine fellow who organises the twin lakes meet) took us to the station in the next town for a donation to charity and picked us up on return. It was a really nice day out.

We stayed at Camping Le Village du Lac earlier this year - at £24 per night it was the most expensive site we stayed at for the two weeks we were away. Its nice enough with a pool and restaurant on site, facilities were ok (not the best we've seen, but nothing wrong with them really) - you're paying for the location and there isn't much choice. Easy bike ride into the city centre, think there was also a bus (but we didn't look at that because we had the bikes). If I remember correctly they have a motorhome bit out the front that might be cheaper than the main campsite?

Campercontact doesn't show any parking places in town but park4night shows a few - none of them proper aires though. There's a big car park in front of the uboat pens and there were some motorhomes that looked like they were parked there permanently. I guess it would be ok to overnight there, but we didn't like the look of it and were glad that we'd chosen the campsite.

Second that at Gradigan, used it a few times to Spain.
Bus terminal just across the road from the site.

Thanks to all that replied and for the advice/recommendations.

For daytime parking. This is at le lac which is to the north of Bordeaux. Plenty of on/off road parking along there easily wide enough to park. If that is no joy for daytime parking then around the other side of le lac is a huge parking area behind the stadium which has a motorhome section and that is a terminal as well for the trams which then run past le lac. I wouldnt overnight at either of these but would leave van during the day.

I think you need to be aware that Bordeaux has a "emissions zone", just saying, not trying to upset,(and I may be wrong),(I often am).

We just went to the tourist office in St Emillion and they gave us a list of vineyards that allow mh to stay overnight. We bought 6 bottles he was happy so were we!. Treated the wife to a slap up meal (at the truckers stop a walk away) for some reason she didn't feel it was a real treat

Camping Albert Plage is lovely.

Agree with Qfour...
...and there are loads of campsites along that stretch of coast, although they will be busy until the end of next week.

Arcachon (or Teste de Buch would be closer) - same train+tram line - with the added bonus of, 'Nostalgic, French, seaside grandeur', and fantastic seafood. I love it.

...or you could go up into the wine country - Margaux/Pauillac direction?

There are, 'park and ride', stations at all the tram terminals.
