Something like 800% I believe, perhaps, and this is a big perhaps, If the UK had continued with their own Gas exploration, Fracking? then we wouldn't be in such a pickle as now (or in the near future)

Just saying

It does seem ironic that the UK is short of CO2 due to high gas prices affecting the fertiliser business (where CO2 is a byproduct).

Short-sightedness of UK???………

There was a retired energy consultant on the tv recently discussing the present gas situation, who said that he was part of a team over 4years ago that had warned the government of their 'neglect' of sufficient emergency gas storage.

The Rough field used to be able to store LOADS of gas, history of it below. Going back to pre privatisation British Gas had HUGE purchasing power so could buy gas at really cheap prices, it also maintained the storage facilities like Rough, it had several R&D establishments and an Exploration division specifically set up to search for gas fields abroad which would then be set up as a joint venture with that Country and BG, which ensured we had plentiful supplies of gas.

Then Maggie Thatcher privatised it and the free market took over and all the expensive bits like storage, exploration and R&D were the first to be abandoned. Story of the UK really, short termism. I bet the Chinese don't think that way !

From Wikipedia;

Production licences for the Rough field were given in 1964, and gas was first brought ashore to Easington gas processing terminal in 1975. In 1980 BG Corporation (which became British Gas plc in 1986 following privatisation) purchased the Rough field with one third of reserves depleted, with the intention of converting the field into a gas storage facility to manage seasonal trends in the supply and demand of gas in the UK. In 1983 BG Corporation made the final decision to convert Rough into a natural gas storage facility which became operational in 1985 as the largest gas storage facility built in the UK continental shelf.

The break-up of BG Corporation in 1997 into BG Group and Centrica meant that BG Storage was created as a standalone business, for competition reasons. In 2001, BG Storage sold the Rough facility to Dynegy. In 2002, Centrica bought the plant back from Dynergy for £304 million during its period of near-bankruptcy. The purchase of Rough led to the Competition Commission requesting certain undertakings being put in place due to Centrica's control of the Morecambe Bay gas fields which at the time were providing 10–15% of the UK's gas supply. In 2003 Centrica provided DECC with a set of undertakings and Centrica Storage Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of Centrica Plc) was formed. Centrica Storage Ltd still operates the Rough facility in accordance with the undertakings.

In June 2017, Centrica announced the closure of the Rough gas storage site due to safety concerns. The rundown of the plant will take up to four years to complete.[1][2][3]

The Americans have reduced energy costs due to fracking?
I don't know about America but if a fracking company in the UK was selling gas, it would be at the same price as everyone else, why sell it cheaper?

Honestly! the energy policy of this country is lunacy! The Uk is supposed to be "green" IT'S NOT!

Wood chips for instance. They are imported from the states. The states chip them, so, the UK is now feeling cosy they are importing a green product ? But! are they? Energy is used to chip the trees, the ships that bring them over are pumping out Carbon monoxide. When the ship arrives , it is unloaded on an open to all weathers Wharf. By electric Cranes/blowers/spirals. Before they are burnt they must be dried. So all the way through from Forest to Furnace they are using a huge amount of energy. AND !! they give off "pure oxygen" when being burnt????? Chance will be a fine thing!
Meanwhile, Cokeing coal is being imported from overseas for the steel works, someone wanted to open a mine here in the UK to produce it here. The design of the mine meant everything would be under cover, The Nimbys and the greenies frothed at the mouth, result? Coal import from overseas , at great expense and emmissions along the way, the planning permission denied!

Hundreds upon hundreds of Solar Panels infest the countryside, covering good agricultural land, AND food is imported from the EU? Growers using 18 century Harvesting methods to gather crops? And want Cash from the government because their cheap "peasant labour" from the EU has gone home. Check out vids from "Noah,s Farm"if you want to see how the rest of the civilised world gather crops, by machine.

And Doomsters are gnashing their teeth because there are empty selves in Tescos and the like, Any fool with half a brain cell could have told you , you can't eat Solar Panels, and when the wind don't blow those windmills, that also infest the countryside, don't do the jobbie!

This winter is going to be a hard one the forecasters say. We will see how this "Zero Emissions" Government, explains to a cold and hungry population why the last coal fired Power Station was shut down, when the Paris Poppinjay and our Vlad in the Kremlin shuts down the energy supply.

Stay safe! Stay warm!

Surely the financial benefits of UK fracking would be the same as that obtained from UK oil production?

Same applies for those green electric cars - production of the car, transport, mining of the lithium, source of electric (nuclear, gas etc.) and the associated losses… less emissions to keep an old car on the road for 15 years than put a new one on them…

The only benefit of UK oil production were taxes on that oil, we didn't get cheap petrol.

I worked on the rught project

We did a few trips out to it in the 80s, I remember some A10s flying around the helicopter one time just showing off. The food was great on the accommodation rig I recall !

Here's a vid which explains what's going on, and also the folly of relying on wind and solar without a backup plan.

Very good article, but seems to omit any mention of the 25/30% additional green levy to all our bills?

Short-sightedness of UK???…
No.. Short-sightedness of the overpaid fatcat CEOs of the power companies.

Should have been nationalised years ago.

No.. Short-sightedness of the overpaid fatcat CEOs of the power companies.

Should have been nationalised years ago.
And end up like every other nationalised industry, bloated with management and run by a "know nothing" lord or lady.

Great news for Remoan'ers though (y)
I know we're not supposed to comment on spelling, grammar or syntax, but, there again, we're not supposed to make political comments; the word is Remainers and what makes you think that comments have been posted exclusively by those who voted in favour of staying in? Tedious and fatuous
