I always thought dogs were not allowed on trams and trains in Spain, but I've been getting mixed messages from various sources. Has anyone tried to take a dog on these trams.

From what I know and have seen, people have taken dogs on the tram, providing they are in a carrier/crate.
And Ive seen everything from a lap dog in a carry crate, to a German Shepherd in a fold up crate. The girl with the gsd got out at Benidorm, trundling the crate behind her , which once out the station she took it out and folded the crate up and wheeled it behind her.

I can now answer my own question as we went on tram yesterday. Went on our Brompton bikes with Jonesy in his bike trailer. Everything OK apart from the fact that tram was busy and bikes got in way of passengers getting on and off. Returning was much better as it wasn't packed and I folded each bike up. Cost 4.60 euros each return.
